IMPORTANT OF RUTILE IN OUR ENVIRONMENT
i am writing this so that our upcoming youth may know that there are some other resources out there that are much valuable to humans than crude oil and any other one you know. Please let try to make this titanium ore a reality by making use of it for our production.
Rutile is a mineral composed primarily of titanium dioxide also referred to as Titania, it has a molecular formular of TiO2.
*Rutile is the most common natural form of TiO2. Many more rarer polymorphs of TiO2 are known: Example are anatase and brookiteRutile is the most stable form of titanium dioxide compare to that of anatase and brookite
Titanium is the ninth(9th) most common of element on the planet.
Natural rutile may contain up to 10% iron and significant amounts of niobium and tantalum
It is non-flammable, non-explosive and titanium dioxide is most widely used pigment because of it brightness and refractive index.
Rutile is found naturally occurring in small quantities as impurities in iron oxide, chromium oxide and vanadium oxide.
Rutile can be found as an independent mineral in almost all metamorphic facies areas. As a typical high-pressure and high-temperature version of TiO2, it is predominantly found in highly metamorphic rocks mainly rich in Al. It is a characteristic mineral for the granulite and eclogite facies.
Its found as an accessory minerals in igneous rocks particularly in deeper form plutonic igneous rocks and also volcanic rocks with deep sources, such as kimberlite
In porphyries, rutile is formed during hydrothermal alteration at the expense of the pre-existing titanium minerals: biotite, hornblende, titanite, ilmenite and titanium magnetite. The titanium released here is precipitated as rutile, particularly at high CO2 pressure.

The production costs for titanium dioxide are relatively high. However, compared to other minerals, the titanium dioxide market produces relatively high profits, because there is a rising demand and a constant supply. In 2003, the biggest producers of titanium dioxide were Australia, South Africa and Canada.
The world’s largest rutile mine, the Sierra Rutile Mine, is in Sierra Leone. The operation covers an area of 580 km2 and is valued at over 3 billion dollars. In 1995, this mine alone produced 25% of the world’s rutile production.
The great thing about the rutile market is that it remains stable despite numerous problems in the segment. There is an adequate number of suppliers to meet global demand, which is continuously growing since the pigments industry is flourishing as well.
Economic Value of Titanium
A large volume of rutile is being consumed by the pigments industry every year. Almost 70 percent of the global extracted rutile ore is processed to make titanium dioxide pigments for paint and coating companies.
This industry, which was worth $121.9 billion in 2017, will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of more than 5 percent between 2017 to 2022, and may reach an estimated value of $176.5 billion in 2022. Hence, the demand for rutile will be intact, encouraging miners to double their production for the next five years.
The great thing about the rutile market is that it remains stable despite numerous problems in the segment. There is an adequate number of suppliers to meet global demand.
Back in 2010 and 2011, there were massive shortages that led to skyrocketing prices, leaving consumers anxious but benefitting the investors immensely.
The supply predicament was aggravated by various global quandaries, among which was the sudden emergence of China as the newest and biggest titanium dioxide exporter. This altered the rutile commerce heavily, since the key importer had become self-sufficient. Producers from South Africa, Brazil, India, and Australia had to sell their rutile ore to consumers outside the Chinese market.
The price of rutile in year 2012 ranges from $1950 - $2200/tonne, but it was approximately stabilize to $2000 for bulk supply.
many companies has enjoy this for long without the youth knowing that this rutile is of great value to our environment.
