Embrace Your Ambition
I've always been curious about musicians for some reason.
Been following rock, hip hop, battle rap & Bollywood music growing up.
I have been curious about them because they had to design a lane for themselves.
Music is a creative field, therefore there is a level of ambiguity that is involved.
There are producers, beat makers & record labels who want structure, don't get me wrong.
But ultimately, it is up to the artist to see how far they will take their career.
Well, growing up, I've seen many artists come and go.
They were powerhouses in their prime.
But nowadays?
I may not even recognize them if I was walking past them in Walmart.
What changed?
I'll tell you what changed.
It was the fire in the belly.
The fire in the belly is a level of determination that you operate with.
When you are an up and coming artist, you have this level of hunger to you.
You want to prove yourself & show that you are a boss.
But when you are given a multi million dollar record deal, endorsements & whatever you ask for, the fire dims.
Sad.
It's sad because the music industry is a pure 'what have you done for me lately' industry.
In order to have a long career, you need to have produced so many hits that people have lost count.
Like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Jay Z etc.
2-3 hits ain't gonna cut it homie!
I remember back in the days, 50 Cent ran the world.
The year was 2003.
He came out with a banger known as 'In Da Club.'
We heard it left and right in my school bus.
That summer, I went to Diani, and I even heard my cousins blasting the song!!
50 was a global phenom.
Recently, I was at the mall & I heard someone in line say:
'Yo! Did you know that guy who created the show Power used to rap?'
These kids!!
50 cent moved on from music, yes.
But ultimately, many artists will not be remembered by the next generation because they aren't consistent.
They don't operate with the same hunger that they did when they were coming up.
So how do you fight this ill fate??
You fix your mindset about plateaus.
The reason a lot of people lose their fire is because of plateaus.
I don't care which field you are in.
You don't consistently grow EVERY single day.
That's fantasy world.
In the real wold?
You grow.
Then you hit a plateau.
Your first plateau, you panic.
You think you broke something..
But nah, it's normal.
Keep going.
When you're that upcoming rapper, your fire in the belly FORCES you to push past the plateau.
When you are that rapper with millions, your contentment has you approaching the plateau with a defeated attitude.
'Why are so few great?'
Because if 'few' were 'many', then great would be ordinary.
Not everyone was meant to be great.
Otherwise, every rapper would be a multi platinum artist.
Every football player would have a Superbowl trophy.
Every basketball player would be inducted into the hall of fame.
Only a few will be great.
The fire in their belly never dims.
They have off days just like anyone else.
But they are masters at having their eyes on the bigger picture.
Which is why they have pig headed persistence towards plateaus.
They been there & done that.
Therefore, they know plateaus are setting them up for the next growth zone.
You need to be honest with yourself.
Which boat are you in?
Are you like the many, or the few?
No need to be ashamed.
But then again, if you chose the right answer, then ashamed is not even in your vocabulary.
Maintain your fire, my friend.
Use it as your engine, fuel & steering wheel.
The end of each plateau hold a new opportunity for growth.
While many fall off in the journey, be the person who others have no choice but to remember.
