There are often choices; trains, bike, scooter, etc.

Everyone going alone in their car whenever they want to go somewhere ... it can work out in the rural areas, but it just doesn't scale, the car takes up too much area (when it's parked, too). Well-organized cities have express-lanes for buses or cars filled up with more than three persons, etc.

Except for that, I'd recommend audio books.
