Organize your bedroom in 5 life changing stepssteemCreated with Sketch.

Hi, my name is Isabelle and I'm a decluttering and organizing expert and today I want to share with you some tips on how you can turn your messy bedroom into an oasis of rest.

Tip number 1:
Make your bed

If you have a morning routine, try to set a special time aside to make your bed every day. Once you get into the habit, it doesn’t take long to put the pillows and blanket in order, but the effect will be massive. You get instantly a cleaner look and feel and you are actually going to look forward to go to bed and slip under your covers.
Simply spread the blanket evenly over the mattress, shake up the pillows and depending on how many pillows you are using, arrange them neatly along the headboard. Done. It can be done in under two minutes. There is no need to make your bed military style, but maybe you’ll want to add more perfection over time. And maybe you even want to invest in high quality bed sheets and decoration pillows to add more luxury and a grown up feeling to your life. The effects are noticeable after the first time, so try it out!

Tip number 2:
Put dirty clothes directly into the laundry bin

We have all done this. We come home after work or the gym, are eager to get out of our dirty clothes and just take them off right there, in the middle of the bedroom and let them fall on the floor or throw over a chair. We might repeat it a few more times in a row and eventually we have to pick everything up again, piece by piece. At this point, you don’t even remember, which shirt is dirty and you have to take a closer look and do a sniff test. And it takes you half an hour to collect a huge pile of laundry.
You could have it so much easier! Put your dirty clothes in the laundry bin right away. Seriously, no excuses. It doesn’t take any more effort, to go directly up to the bin and get undressed. But this way, you’re not collecting clutter around your bedroom and you know right away, when the bin is full, so that you can do your laundry right away. The room will have a much nicer and cleaner look and all it takes is a little change in your habit.

Tip number 3:
Declutter your wardrobe with the Marie Kondo method

I highly, highly recommend using this method, if you want to tidy up your wardrobe and reduce the amount of possessions you have, to make space for thing that are really important in your life. Marie Kondo wrote a fantastic book about her decluttering method called "The Life Changing Magic Of Tidying Up" and you can find a lot of videos on YouTube about it, if you are interested. But I’ll describe her main principle really quick: Gather every clothing item you own together and decide, if you want to keep an item or throw it away, by asking yourself one question: Does it spark joy? That’s it. If it sparks joy to you (you’ll know what that feels like if you think about your favourite t shirt or of your most loved pair of jeans), then keep it and try out Marie Kondo’s art form of storing clothing items. If it doesn’t spark joy, then say goodbye and put it in a donation bag. You will be amazed, how much more room you’ll have in your closet and the beautiful thing is, that you’ll only wear the clothes, that you really love.

Tip number 4:
The floor is lava

Make it a rule to not keep anything lying around on your bedroom floor. Your room will look so much nicer and kept together, without the piles of books and magazines next to the bed and several pairs of shoes in the corner.
Now that you have decluttered your wardrobe, you should have enough room to store those shoes in the cupboard. Try to find a place for each of your belongings in drawers and shelves. It makes vacuuming and cleaning much easier too!

Tip number 5:
Put things back

Whenever you leave the bedroom to go into a different room, take something with you, that you need to put back into that room. You’re going that way anyway, so why not make use out of it? Take that used coffee mug with you, when you go into the kitchen or hang that wet hair towel back on the rack, when you go for a wee. Once you make it a habit, it won’t feel like tidying up so much, but instead an efficient use of your time.
