What To Do When We Feel Burned Out

It's a common phenomenon in today's world, that people get burned out for different reasons. I'm one of these people.

First of all, a burnout can mean many different things, it can be physically or mentally, it can be emotionally and it can be 'intellectually'. It can be based on too much stress or fear, and it can also be based on frustrations, entanglement, resentment – spiritual, psychological or physical depletion. Now, while there is a distinction between these categories, I think it's also important to notice that they all flow together.

Our spiritual health dictates our mental capacities, and our mental health dictates our physical actions. Since we live in a time of turbulence, stress, and change, it has become increasingly difficult to balance ourselves. What I think is most common, is that we get caught up in our minds, in the sense that we have some emotional pain and lock ourselves up. This world is centered around external values, reaching our carrier, gaining money, and being successful. I'm not saying that this is all bad, it's just dangerous if our own suffering (feeling sad, emotional lack, emotional pains, etc) is not treated the right way. It's easy to realize that just like our bodies can get hurt, so can our self. But the thing with mental issues though, is that they don't always show very well to our surroundings. When our feet hurt, the foot may look alright outwardly, and someone might say, “it looks fine, continue working”. So we do that, and a week later our foot has swollen, gotten inflamed, infected, and we suffer physical exhaustion, having to spend 6 months in a hospital or something.

That's not good. And the same thing can be translated to psychological pain. Like in my case, stress. We are fairly stress resistant, and it can be kept in check by healthy lifestyle choices etc, but if we cross the line, we are basically not functioning anymore, it doesn't even matter if we rest, eat well, exercise – that scar will probably always remain.

So then what should we do? Well, hitting the stress wall is probably among the most common ways people get burned, but like I mentioned, it's far from the only. Most people are fairly well-balanced, but many people feel for instance the lack of importance, feelings of meaninglessness, etc. And while these emotions may not be as harmful as stress, they are still a cause of suffering, and I think this could be a clue to the answer. People have different problems, and while one group are handicapped from doing something particular, they may still be able to contribute in other ways. So the answer is clearly that we have to pivot.




On a more serious note though, it's a complicated matter, and while it's easy to say "don't get burned out", at the same time, it might be hard to avoid. So again, it's something we need to balance. Health is not to be taken for granted – we need to help each other, and try to be open when people want to help us. The biggest mistake I've made myself, is to think that I can do everything on my own. It has made me strong in some ways, but in the end feel pretty miserable... However, everything we do, we do for a reason, and it's probably more important to do the right thing right now, than to reflect on the things we did wrong in the past.
