Assassination of Martin Luther King
Hello everyone today I'm going to talk to you about Martin Luther King.
Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15,1929, and was murdered on April 4,1968 in Memphis, Tennessee. He is an African-American Baptist pastor, a non-violent activist for the civil rights of blacks in the United States, for peace and against poverty.
He organizes and directs actions such as the boycott of Montgomery buses to defend voting rights, desegregation and the employment of ethnic minorities. He gave a famous speech to the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D. C. on August 28,1963 during the March for Jobs and Freedom:"I have a dream. It is supported by John F. Kennedy in the fight against racial segregation in the United States; most of these rights will be promoted by the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act under the presidency of Lyndon B. Johnson.
Martin Luther King became the youngest Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1964 for his non-violent struggle against racial segregation and for peace. He then began a campaign against the Vietnam War and poverty, which ended in 1968 with his assassination officially attributed to James Earl Ray, whose guilt and participation in a conspiracy are still debated.
He was posthumously awarded the Presidential Freedom Medal by Jimmy Carter in 1977, the United Nations Human Rights Award in 1978, the Congress Gold Medal in 2004, and is considered one of the greatest American speakers1. Since 1986, Martin Luther King Day has been a holiday in the United States.
Pastor Martin Luther King, Jr., one of the leading figures in the U. S. civil rights movement, was shot dead at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee, on April 4,1968. King was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in the city, where his death was pronounced. Responsible for the African-American Civil Rights Movement and Nobel Peace Prize winner, he is known for his use of non-violence and civil disobedience.
James Earl Ray, a fugitive from Jefferson City Penitentiary in Missouri, was arrested on 8 June 1968 at London Heathrow Airport. He was extradited to the United States and charged with the crime. On March 10,1969, Ray pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 99 years in prison in Tennessee. Later, Ray made numerous attempts to withdraw his confession and asked to be tried before a jury, unsuccessfully. Ray died in prison on April 23,1998.
The King family, among others, believes that the assassination was the result of a conspiracy involving the U. S. government, as Loyd Jowers claimed in 1993, and that Ray is therefore only a scapegoat. In 1999, the King family sued Jowers for homicide for $10 million. During the trial, evidence alleging conspiracy is presented. Accused government agencies cannot defend themselves because they are not named as defendants. The jury concluded that Jowers and "others" were part of a conspiracy to kill King.
