Perception is personal and in a way unique, but it can be easily affected by external stimulus as well. The basis of our perception might be the perception of the people we are close to or people we usually spend time with. It's simple, yet complicated.

"The realization that you can’t place your own perceptions in someone else’s mind can help you expand your capacity for true empathy and acceptance." --> This is very true. I think, for us to accept the perception of others, we should accept our own perceptions first without biases.
