Rumeli Fortress Historical
The Rumeli Fortress is the sultan of the period who wanted to surround Istanbul in front of the Anatolian Fortress which had been built about 50 years ago. It was built by Mehmet (Fatih). The purpose of the construction is to prevent Byzantine aid from the Black Sea with Anatolian Fortress and gain control over the throat. Because Istanbul has been subjected to encompassing times before, and all the sieges have been slowed down by the strong walls and have been overcome by the help of the sea.
In order to prevent these aid, the fort was built on April 15, 1452 and completed in about 4 months. The wall thicknesses, the bastions, the positions of the gates and similar characteristics were determined by Fatih Sultan Mehmet himself and the project was designed by Muslihiddin Aga. The Great Istanbul Earthquake, which caused great devastation in Istanbul in 1509, suffered great damage, but this damage was removed by the order of the ruler of the period without losing time. In 1746 a fire broke out in his fortress and his fortress was destroyed. The damage caused by the fire could be removed at the end of the 1700s. During the Republican era, the citadel was passed through a comprehensive revamp in 1953 under the orders of Celal Bayar.
