A Step Forward
The prominence of education keeps gaining ground despite the latest trend in the sudden belief and quest for handworks. This was the case in the past as traditional African communities had thrived on handworks such as beadmaking, clay works, tye and dye, iron works and most especially various activities in the agricultural sector.However, with the emergence of colonialism and the entry of the white man with his white ways, western education came to be. This emergence saw the diversion of several Africans away from their norms and values into western values such as the western education as it was a necessity towards breakthrough financially and socially. It was also seen as a medium of chasing political goals.
This educated sect were highly recognized and respected in the society. Hence, the forerunners of earlier African modes of education were relegated to the background.
Let’s take a leap into our present days. The following dialogue attempts a vivid analysis of the present day and it’s attitude towards western education;
“No be everybody go make am through school. Them no create school for everybody.”
“ A school won't teach you how to fight life battles. Na only theory them dey teach, them no dey teach practical “
Does this mean western education is beginning to lose its place? With this at the back of their minds, many see it mandatory to equip themselves with hand works such as hairdressing, fashion designing, make-up and catering, however, forgetting that it is also a form of education.
Education doesn't occur just in the four walls of a school alone. It occurs everywhere, everyday and anytime, drawing a direct comparison between life and a rainbow just after a storm.
It would be alright then to conclude that we are bodies and education is the soul that moulds us together.
Education is the tool that would fight the unseen leprosy that feeds deep in our skin, vices such as poverty. Whether formally or informally, whether it takes place in the four walls of a school or a bakery, be it a four wall of a school or farm and it’s fresh smell of leaves; it is education.
We only seize living when we see no need to learn, when we go into immoral acts to keep body and soul together.
With this knowledge, having finished my B.SC microbiology, I am currently pursuing a career in M.SC microbiology.
Life as an undergraduate was beautiful, stressful, fulfilling and I look forward to a brighter, beautiful, successful and better days as a master student.
