What’s your ugly?

in #life6 years ago

Ugliness, it’s everywhere, it haunts the streets, common spaces, intimate moments and it transmutes itself into those sticks that are used to beat things, turning things to ugly like a magician with an ugly wand.

When you hear the word ‘ugly’ what comes to mind? A face you saw some time ago, the unfortunate dog that lost one of his legs or maybe your ugly is a personality type, a mannerism or even a particular scent. I know there’s also a bias out there that also deem the dolled up cake layered synthetic coloured and plastic augmented type of person ugly as well. Something must have driven them to go to such extremes, perhaps they were told they were ugly once upon a natural unadjusted time.

I asked a few people of various age, status, gender what they consider ugly- I was given such a vast array of deep and meaningful answers, they all however had a certain type of commonality. This ugliness was not about looks: "Someone who expects everything to fall by their feet, taking everything to their advantage and never contributing, like a parasite living off its host, a one way street." Another person told me "Personality, they can be a supermodel on the outside but if their personality is like licking a gravel road, their looks become ugly." I then followed up that answer asking if they now had an instant bias against good looking people, assuming their personalities are probably rotten. The response was a confident no and it’s different per person.

Funny thing is, as I traverse through the laneways of life, encountering human interactions, this general conclusion above is not mirrored by people’s actions. If this is the case than why are trigger points of non-uglyism governed by the very things people are considering ugly. It could be I happened to stumble across a niche group of people who answered my question with absolute consideration past surface level stuff. Or could we just be saying things that we think wants to be heard and then act on our deep seeded instincts of reproduction; creating a strong race based on physical, emotional and intellectual superiorism.

I think, we make ourselves the most appealing as possible on the outside, the surface, because that’s level one. There may be a wholesome, spritely, giving, vegetarian zombie out there whose only mates are a few insects because frankly, everyone else runs screaming. I wonder if they'd cast that character in The Last Of Us... That’s an extreme example of level one stuff, level one is click bait, the advertising, it’s then up to the individual to construct the remaining levels. In the end, it seems no matter what we do, there will always be an opinion of you that you are ugly in some way, in someone’s eyes. But what do you think about yourself, does it really matter what is thought about you and your ugly or not so ugly parts.

The ultimate ugliness is if someone is a total ass towards other people. An ugly person inside. Outer ugliness is like beauty. In the eye of the beholder.

Beautifully said, I understand the outer ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Also culture has a huge influence on what’s considered ugly, like a learnt perspective.

Ugly certainly takes on many forms including the ugliness of spirit in the person who judges others prior to having any information on them, or even for how they may appear outwardly. Who is the ugly one in this case. I think we know the answer. Ugliness is taking advantage of the weak, or lording authority over subordinates. Ugliness is a lack of manners, respect and courtesy and ugliness is hubris and greed.Ugliness is shunning and ostracising those who are different just because they are different. Ugliness is this and more.

Who is the ugly one in this case. I think we know the answer.

A reflection of ones own ugliness, agreed. Well said!

What do I think about myself? I look at the character Sheldon on 'The Big Bang Theory' and see shades of myself in social situations, and, earnestly hope that I am not really like that.
I think selfishness and naked ambition is ugly and it shows a lot in politicians, social climbers, corporate climbers etc.
Nature has a way of repairing the ugliness we leave behind.

There’s a real shallow quality in selfishness but I do think it’s masking something much deeper.

Nature has a way of repairing the ugliness we leave behind.
