Miyakejima;The Town Where Everyone Wears A Gas Mask

Miyakejima is an island located in the Philippines sea approximately 180 kilometres southeast of Honshu, Japan.

The island which currently inhabit about 2451 people as at June, 2016 has been known for continuous volcanic eruption over the past 10000 to 15000 years.

The island have a mountain called Mount Oyama. Mount Oyama is an active volcano with a height of 775.1 meters and it has been recorded to have erupted several times, it has erupted 13 times over the past 500 years.

Around July 2000, Mount Oyama began another series of eruptions and the Island was evacuated completely by September. The residents returned permanently on February 1, 2005 after a four year period of volcanic emissions.

Since then, there has been a constant flow of sulphur dioxide gas coming from Mount Oyama and because of this residents are required to wear gas masks with them at all times.
