How To Make Better Decisions In Life
So Daniel Kahneman described in his book the way we think in an unparelleled fashion. He divides our thought process in two systems: System 1 and System 2. As these systems play off against each other, their interactions determine how we think, make judgements and decisions, and act.
System 1.
The best way to describe System 1 is by comparing it with your brain on auto-pilot. System 1 has huge benefits but is also flawed at the same time. Studies have shown that System 1 is the part of our brain that can process information very fast but it can also be very inaccurate. The main reason for this is because System 1 is driven by impulse, intuition and emotion, which can cause biases and bad decisions.
Let's say you're at work, and you suddenly hear a very loud sound. You probably immediatly and automaticly shift your attention towards the sound. That's System 1.
What problems can System 1 solve?
5x5= ...
Capital of France?
Name of a WOII dictator?
Jump away from a car that's speeding towards you
System 2.
This system is considered to be thoughtful, deliberate and calculating. It is responsible for our reasoning and beliefs. Imagine you're looking for a friend in the crowd. Your mind deliberately focuses on the task, it recalls characteristics of the person and anything that would help locate her. This focus helps eliminate potential distractions and you barely notice other people in the crowd. If you maintain this focused attention, you might spot your friend within a matter of minutes. Whereas if you're distracted and lose focus, you'll have trouble finding your friend.
It is important to be aware of these systems and how to use them. This way we'll be better at making decisions.
