By This Is Africa on July 18, 2016 — Today the world celebrates the birth and legacy of a giant, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela, South Africa’s first black and democratically elected president, who served from 1994 to 1999. Mandela’s great achievements and legacy cannot be adequately described in words, we look at some important moments in Madiba’s life captured on camera in these ten pictures.

Madiba, as he was affectionately called spent 27 years in prison and fervently fought for democracy, freedom, justice, racial equality and reconciliation. A true son of Africa, a Pan-Africanist, nationalist, charismatic orator, thinker and African statesman.

During his lifetime, Mandela inspired the world and his legacy lives on. Madiba’s legacy continues to inspired social justice and human rights activists across the world and his vision for a just, non-racial and equal society is shared by many.

As we celebrate what would have been Mandela’s 98th birthday, we look at some important moments in Madiba’s life captured on camera.
