Blue Crabs in the Ocean
In the late winter and early spring I focus my energy beyond the protection of the inside sounds, creeks, and rivers to fish crab pots in the Atlantic Ocean. Female crabs like to move towards deep salty waters off the beach around inlets and patches of mud. This is one of the only strategies this time of year to produce any quantity of crabs. The rough spring weather can keep you "on the hill" but every so often you get a window to fish.
Although Blue Crabs are targeted, there tends to be a variety of catch including this Stone Crab.
Not all the crabs are kept and everything is released live in this clean fishery. Check out these Calico Crabs.
Lots of odd creatures and shells end up in the cull box. Anything look out of place in this picture.
Just a crabber, a couple pelicans , and the end of the horizon. Flat days don't come often.
Back to the inside right before sunset!
Cool Crabs, are stone crabs good eating?
They are delicious! You only eat the claws though. The crab is released and it regenerates a new one.
Do you only harvest claws for all your crabs or just the stone crabs?
Just Stone Crabs. Blue Crabs are harvested then sold live by the dozen or bushel.
