Interesting perspective but I am skeptical. You suggest that evolution might "might lead us in a far more harmonious, successful direction" than culture.
I dunno.
All evolution cares about is gene replication. That's it. It doesn't care about human flourishing, or morality, or any of the cultural values we hold dear.
I believe that we can hold ourselves to a higher standard given to us through our own rationality and self-consciousness. We can set our own narratives independently of the pressures for gene replication. That's what makes us special.
This, people anthropomorphise the world as if it cares, it doesn't, and the lion eating the cubs of it's competitor is no different than making the switchboard worker redundant. It's a fact, utterly without moral quality.
I think evolution definitely does tend to apply to morals and us flourishing in many ways... mainly because of the social construct of humanity. In fact, our moods are adaptive and have evolved over time in response to our environment. Considering that people are social creatures, highly dependent on our moods and sometimes a slave to our horomones by design, it could be said that there is more than meets the eye. Granted, it's not like the genes give a crap how we FEEL lol but in the grander design I think there is a place for the evolution of these things and they are interconnected, and something we don't entirely control on our own. At least not anymore. We learn coping skills at an age when reason and logic mean little, we react before we learn to think... again by design. The act of learning to break through and practice rationality, be aware of the conscious and navigate, I believe, is a part of our adaptation both as individuals and as a species.
Laws are not with or without flaws, the idea of a 'flaw' is a human concept.
Likewise, living standards improve in almost every country almost every year and much of your reservations are unfounded.
The only real problem is implementation, there is so much good being created, it is just not being taken up because people put the power in politicians, and the politicians have no vision or courage.
Until there is global movement towards genuine self-interest and responsibility, change will be slow.
In my view, we are approaching a phase where our personal but also the collective perception of ourselves as humans and our perception of the world we live in has begun to increasingly speed up shifting, from a material viewpoint to a more mental viewpoint. I am confident that in the near future (let's say in about 200 years) this shift will be completed and it will no longer be necessary for us to take lessons from "depression, anxiety, addictions, broken relationships, debt, soul-sucking J.O.B.s, domestic violence, wars, terrorism, poverty, man-made environmental disasters, corporate & banking scandals." This will more and more get obsolete as we are beginning to understand the deeper connection we have in-between humanity but also to the nature of reality. Namaste.
Nice post man... I agree it's always important to keep a strong foot in each of the subjective and objective realities and consider their importance to one's being.. give thanks
We are going through some major 'shifts.' I'm 57, and I've seen huge changes in our society, at least here in the US. Also, maybe none of us will change the world in a profound way, individually, but it seems as though the general attitude among the masses is changing. No longer are the people willing accept that the rich get richer, and the poor get poorer, and that's just the way it is. That's why I'm so excited about the blockchain technology. It has the potential to change things in a very big way, and not just for the wealthy.
Maybe, just maybe, there is perfection in the "chaos," as you mentioned.
Most sit and dwell on the erroneous idea they can't do shit about their circumstances. In this state, who/where they get their EXTERNAL motivation from is irrelevant, without the necessary INNER motivation to actually get up and do something about it.
Great post, can't wait for part two!

Well said!
