North Aceh is one of the districts in Aceh Province, Indonesia. This district with has area of 3,237 km2, was once the largest producer of natural gas in Indonesia and even in the world. The source of natural gas was first discovered in Arun Village in 1971 by the Mobil Oil Company. The natural gas from the Arun Field was collected in 4 clusters around Point A, the head office of Mobil Oil in North Aceh. The natural gas and condensate that has been separated at 4 clusters is then sent to PT. Arun NGL located in Blang Lancang, Lhokseumawe. PT. Arun has 6 processing units (trains) that process natural gas into liquefied natural gas (LNG).

The Arun Gas Field location is about 10 km from my house. When I was a kid, Mobil Oil just started operating. The hustle of this big industrial activity enliven the economy of the surrounding community. Many people work there as drivers, security guards, office boys, welders, cooks, etc., most of the jobs that don't need special skills. They are paid a fairly large amount. Sturdy and slippery asphalt roads around are built. The Point A office is even equipped with an airport. Routine airplane pass our roof every 7:00 a.m., 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., transporting Mobil Oil employees (Medan - Point A).

In another area called Landing, near Lhoksukon other facilities were built such as the Bachelor Camp and Ware House. This Bachelor Camp is a place to stay with facilities like hotels, complete with bars and swimming pools. In 1997, my friends and I enjoyed this luxury place for a month, while doing On The Job Training at Mobil Oil. Mobil Oil also built housing for its employees at the Bukit Indah Complex in Lhokseumawe. A beautiful residential complex like a housing in USA.

The existence of Mobil Oil and PT. Arun made the Lhokseumawe city of and its surroundings grow rapidly and sparkling, so that it called the City of Petro Dollar. The revenue sharing from natural gas production for decades has supported the Indonesian economy. Even though not everyone feels the benefits of this industry and most of the surrounding community still lives below the poverty line, this industry has always kept us lulled by dreams, that our area is rich. Even, we are enchanted, this era will never end.

Today, the condition is really different from the past. The golden age of natural gas has ended. Mobil Oil, which later became Exxon Mobil, ended its activities at the Arun Gas Field in 2015 and subsequently submitted to PT. Pertamina Hulu Energi which now manages the remnants of gas. PT. Arun also shipped its last LNG to Korea in October 2014 and subsequently the assets of PT. Arun will become a Gas Terminal managed by Pertagas.

Exxon Mobil's assets that are currently in Landing have been submitted to the North Aceh Regency Government. Bachelor Camp has become a government office complex, unfortunately all facilities such as swimming pools and some buildings have been damaged due to looting by irresponsible people. Likewise, Bukit Indah housing has been granted to the University of Malikussaleh, unfortunately the condition is no longer beautiful as before.

A few weeks ago I passed the Point A area, from a distance it was seen Cluster 3, 2 and 1 still standing firmly, but there was almost no activity there. Silencer is still gaping, but no longer sounds like it used to, roaring until it is heard to our house. No more workers passing by with safety helmet on their heads.

Right at Point A, i could see the first gas well that found, still spitting flare but it's small, the flare isn't as bright as it used to be. This fire was once taken to light the torch of the 11th National Sports Week (PON), in 1985. At that time the torch bearer ran from Point A to Jakarta.

The airport was deserted, no more air condoms waving there. I continued down the road that was familiarly called pipe line, had to be careful, the road that used to be smooth now full of holes, seemed to wake us up, that the dream really had ended. It's time for us to return to focus working on our paddy fields along this road, the only property that we really have.[]

Aceh Utara adalah sebuah Kabupaten di Provinsi Aceh Indonesia. Kabupaten dengan luas 3.237 km2 ini dulunya adalah penghasil gas alam terbesar di Indonesia bahkan di dunia. Sumber gas alam pertama kali ditemukan di Desa Arun pada tahun 1971 oleh perusahaan Mobil Oil. Gas dari Ladang Gas Arun ini dikumpulkan di 4 kluster di sekitar Point A, merupakan kantor pusat Mobil Oil di Aceh Utara. Gas dan kondensat yang telah dipisahkan di 4 kluster ini kemudian dikirim ke PT. Arun NGL yang berlokasi di Blang Lancang, Lhokseumawe. PT. Arun memiliki 6 unit pengolah (train) yang mengolah gas alam menjadi gas alam cair (LNG).

Lokasi Ladang Gas Arun berjarak sekitar 10 km dari rumah saya. Saat saya kecil, Mobil Oil baru mulai beroperasi. Hiruk pikuk kegiatan industri besar ini menyemarakkan ekonomi masyarakat sekitar. Banyak yang bekerja di sana sebagai supir, satpam, office boy, tukang las, koki dan lain-lain, sebagian besar merupakan pekerjaan yang tidak butuh skill khusus. Mereka digaji dengan jumlah yang lumayan besar. Jalan-jalan aspal yang kokoh dan licin di sekitar dibangun. Kantor Point A bahkan dilengkapi dengan lapangan terbang. Pesawat terbang rutin melewati atap rumah kami setiap pukul 7 pagi, 12 siang dan 6 sore, mengangkut karyawan Mobil Oil (Medan - Point A).

Di area lain yang disebut Landing, dekat Lhoksukon dibangun fasilitas-fasilitas lain seperti Guest House (Bachelor Camp) dan Ware House. Bachelor Camp ini merupakan tempat penginapan dengan fasilitas seperti hotel, lengkap dengan bar dan kolam renang. Tahun 1997, saya dan beberapa teman sempat menikmati kemewahan tempat ini selama sebulan lebih, saat melakukan On The Job Training di Mobil Oil. Mobil Oil juga membangun perumahan untuk karyawannya di Komplek Bukit Indah Lhokseumawe. Sebuah komplek hunian yang asri seperti perumahan di luar negeri.

Keberadaan Mobil Oil dan PT. Arun membuat kota Lhokseumawe dan sekitarnya berkembang pesat dan gemerlap hingga disebut sebagai Kota Petro dollar. Bagi hasil dari produksi gas alam ini selama puluhan tahun telah menyokong perekonomian Indonesia. Walaupun tidak semua orang merasakan secara langsung manfaat industri ini dan sebagian besar masih hidup di bawah garis kemiskinan, namun industri ini telah membuat kami selalu terbuai mimpi, bahwa daerah kami adalah daerah kaya. Kami tersihir seakan akan era ini tak akan pernah berakhir.

Kondisinya sungguh berbeda dengan saat ini. Masa-masa kejayaan gas alam telah berakhir. Mobil Oil yang kemudian menjadi Exxon Mobil telah mengakhiri kegiatannya di Ladang Gas Arun dan selanjutnya diserahkan kepada PT. Pertamina Hulu Energi yang kini mengelola sisa-sisa gas. PT. Arun juga sudah mengapalkan LNG terakhirnya ke Korea pada Oktober 2014 dan selanjutnya aset PT. Arun akan menjadi Terminal Gas yang dikelola oleh Pertagas.

Aset Exxon Mobil yang berada di Landing saat ini sudah diserahkan ke Pemerintah Kabupaten Aceh Utara. Bachelor Camp sudah menjadi komplek perkantoran, sayangnya semua fasilitas seperti kolam renang dan beberapa bangunan telah rusak karena dijarah oleh orang-orang yang tidak bertanggungjawab. Demikian juga perumahan Bukit Indah sudah dihibahkan untuk Universitas Malikussaleh, sayangnya kondisinya tidak lagi asri dan indah seperti dulu.

Beberapa minggu lalu saya melewati daerah Point A, dari jauh terlihat Kluster 3, 2 dan 1 masih berdiri kokoh, namun nyaris tidak ada aktifitas di sana. Silencer masih menganga, namun tidak lagi bersuara seperti dulu, mengaum hingga terdengar ke rumah kami. Tidak ada lagi pekerja lalu lalang dengan helm safety di kepala.

Tepat di Point A, terlihat sumur gas pertama yang ditemukan, masih menyemburkan api namun kecil, nyalanya tidak seterang dulu. Api ini dulu pernah diambil untuk menyalakan obor Pekan Olahraga Nasional (PON) ke XI, pada tahun 1985. Saat itu kirab pembawa obor berlari bergantian dari Point A hingga ke Jakarta.

Lapangan terbang sepi, tidak ada lagi kondom udara melambai di sana. Saya terus menyusuri jalan yang akrab disebut line pipa, berhati-hati, jalan yang dulu mulus sekarang penuh lubang, serasa membangunkan kami, bahwa mimpi benar-benar telah berakhir. Saatnya kami harus kembali fokus menggarap sawah-sawah kami di sepanjang jalan ini, satu-satunya harta yang benar-benar kami miliki.[]
