Between the clunky binder and the clunkier file cabinet thrives a cluster of peechee-style pocketed folders on loose rings. This system works as well for receiving incoming mail as it does for keeping notes toward that novel, or magazine clippings, or garden plans. Regardless of how many hats you wear, loose binding is an intuitive way to keep it together. 

Personal style increases an organizational system's function, as it takes advantage of the ability of the senses to aid in memory. So make it yours, make it fun, keep it simple and you’ll be organized. 

Simply group a set of four or so pocket folders on loose rings. When a project starts to develop branches and sub-categories, papers can be clipped or grouped in file folders that fit right into the pockets. I like to keep blank paper, extra file folders, labels and other bits in the last folder of the set. Before long, your system will develop into a flexible tool. 

When a project goes into hibernation, as can happen without warning, you can quickly remove the folders intact to shelve or archive in a file box, magazine box etc. The nesting of files inside folders inside hanging files in a box or file cabinet actually makes for an intuitive and tidy system that is easy to search. It gets even easier to recognize pocket folders when they are flashy and different from each other. Two rings works almost as well as three.
