King Salmon spawning in an Alaskan River Underwater View
Chinook salmon also known as King salmon are the largest Pacific salmon species and on average grow to be 3 feet long and approximately 30 pounds. Some Chinook salmon can reach more than 5 feet long and 110 pounds. King salmon reach maturity anywhere from 3 to 7 years of age. A female Chinook salmon can deposit anywhere from 3,000 to 14,000 eggs in a nest. Male salmon are very protective of the nesting area and tirelessly attempt to ward off sneaky egg thieves. Note the Arctic Char / Dolly Varden swimming nearby hoping to get a few floating salmon eggs. King salmon has the highest fat content of all the five Pacific salmon species and is generally considered the most delicious.
