Gliding: Precision Landings

in #life6 years ago

As part of a student's learning process we learn to do precision landings in sailplanes.

A precision landing, (also called spot landing) brings the glider to a complete stop at a predetermined place. Unlike power planes, we only have one "go" at landing. We cannot go around. Therefore this is very important to us for many reasons! One of the reasons we practice precision landings is because, when we land out on a farm field or anywhere else outside of our airport, we may encounter obstacles such as fences and poles. This would mean we would require the plane to stop before hitting any of those items - seriously injuring yourself or damaging the aircraft.

Here's our clubs L23 sailplane doing just that.
