STRIVE TO BE BETTER THAN YOUR FORMER SELF

in #life6 years ago

American novelist, short story writer and journalist, Ernest Hemingway, once noted that there's no humility in being superior to your fellow man. True nobility, he says, stems from being superior to your former self. I couldn't agree with him more. It's OK to be ambitious, to want to do more than others have done, to want to be better and to want to be the best. A good friend once told me, there's no such thing as over ambitious. Be that as it may, we must often realize that we are never on the same playing field, the only thing we have equally as humans is probably time. There are those that are born into success and wealth and there are those who have fought the hard fight, go against the odds, I am talking about self made success.

While comparing yourself to others ahead of you could provide motivation, hope and inspiration for some people, it could equally be a source of frustration, inferiority complex and low self esteem for many. At the end of the day, we are all probably travelling to the same destination-a happy and fulfilling life, and each of us will attain this in different and varied ways, some early, some late. But if you keep moving forward, irrespective of your pace, you will get there, maybe it will take longer, but surely, you will. Wake up every morning knowing that you are better today than you were yesterday, this is true nobility.

Those who improve with age embrace the power of personal growth and personal achievement and begin to replace youth with wisdom, innocence with understanding, and lack of purpose with self-actualization (Bo Bennett).

I think that there should be only two reasons why you compare yourself to others, to see how far you can go, and how far you've come in life. Don't let their achievements intimidate you, neither should you stop moving forward because you're ahead of your peers.
