But a simple test can prevent this from happening, this test is called ORGANIC IMPURITY TEST, telling you if the sand contain organic content. The test indicate if sand to be used in constructing is mixable with CEMENT.

Apparatus/Reagent include Bottle, dilute NaOH, Stirrer, Spatula

PROCEDURE
Obtain a 300 g air-dried sample of sand to be used,
Fill the glass bottle to the 133 mL mark with the material to be tested.
Add enough NaOH solution to the bottle to cover the sample. Place cap or stopper on jar
and stirre to remove air bubbles.
Bring the solution level up to the 207 mL mark, stopper, and stirre again.
Allow the bottle and contents to stand undisturbed for 24 hours.
At the end of the 24-hour standing period, if the color of the supernatant liquid is neutral, light yellow, yellow, light brown or brown it indicate the sample is good for construction but if the supernatant liquid is dark brown or black it indicate the sample is bad for construction.....
The reaction
NaOH + SiO2 ---------- H2O +Na2SiO3(the supernatant liquid)
With this simple test building collapsing can be avioded............
