Morning Primer - Daily Quote #2 - Mental Diet
Mental Diet
My morning primer creates a nutritious Mental Diet for me to consume in preparation for the day. Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, I use my morning primer to feed my brain all the things I’ve identified as most beneficial, every morning right after waking up. Excessive social media, news and reddit reinforce bad habits as you become accustom to the fast paced micro dopamine hits, the undeserved rewards of the hedonistic treadmill as you keep it spinning.
Nutrition isn't just for the body but also for the mind and spirit, if you eat the wrong foods, consume the wrong media, feed yourself spiritual garbage, you're going to suffer in the long run. The idea that the mind and body are connected, that a healthy mind leads to a healthy body and a healthy body leads to a healthy mind isn't a new age idea, it's an idea older than civilisation. This ties in with today's quote, which comes from Buddhism but also ties in Stoicism and reminds me of NLP and CBT.
"The mind is everything. What you think you become."
Mental chatter is everything. We all have a little voice inside our heads which gives us insight into how we truly feel about ourselves. The language that voice uses, or we choose to use, becomes our reality. If your inner voice is constantly berating you, comparing yourself to others and generally beating yourself up you're not going to be very happy in life. These harsh often parental inner-voices may help you achieve great financial successes as they can be one of the greatest driving forces but is it really worth it if you aren't happy with yourself?
When I began to read about NLP and CBT I first realised this, you could influence who you're going to become by first curating your inner dialogue. The way in which we think, the words we use, the thoughts we feed, the emotions we allow to dominate us, can all be controlled. It’s a lifelong process of pruning back negative thought patterns and planting the seeds of positivity so that we're always better tomorrow than we were today.
“No man has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his body is capable.”
-Socrates
I think the only way the mind can perform optimally is if the body is taken care of. The two are explicitly linked. One can not succeed to its fullest potential if the other is lacking.
To take care of the body is to take care of the mind, undoubtedly, and I'm glad to see others share this perspective.
So true. I think everyone should see what their physical body is capable of achieving.
Probably the greatest strain on the health care system are diseases amplified by the sedentary lifestyles we lead. We're supposed to move, not just exercise but to play and use our bodies to manipulate our physical environment.
