Oral contraceptives - a cure for skin problems
I am pretty sure that a great number of people will read this title and think: "Someone should explain to this guy what oral contraceptives are used for."
I don't blame you. A few years ago, I probably would have thought the same thing.
I had this mindset I actually heard from my friend that her dermatologist prescribed the pills form her acne.
And a few more months after that.
Immediately I thought to myself that she ended up with a doctor who got his MD at a Taco Bell parking lot and began to persuade her that those pills are not used for acne.
She tried to explain, but I didn't listen.
Then, on the day of the exam, I got a question:
"In addition to the basic indication, oral contraceptives are also used in the treatment of ______."
You see that blank space? Same blank space was in my head. I had no freaking clue. Of course, I failed the exam, so I had to get to know oral contraceptives a bit better in order to pass my exam.
Let's begin.
What are oral contraceptives or popularly " the pill"?
Oral contraception is a mixture of hormones that is formulated in tablets and whose primary purpose is to prevent unwanted pregnancy.
How is this happening?
Hormones that are found in these tablets suppress ovulation in a specific way, they make the endometrium of the uterus thin and poorly bled. In other words, they annul the conditions for fertilization. If these tablets are used properly, they can be almost 100% effective.
So what does that have to do with the facial skin?
Acne, pimples and other similar pathological skin conditions are due to changes in metabolism and hormone activity (which is why most occur in puberty).
Now, however it sounds contradictory, oral contraceptives actually bring reproductive hormones to normal. They regulate their secretion and their functioning. Therefore, after a certain time, it will have very good effects on the skin. Very, very good.
So do not be surprised if you hear that the doctor just prescribed these pills for problematic skin and acne. Because of these very good effects, this is not a rare practice.
However, keep in mind that such pills are HORMONES, very serious medication. They are not recommended for women over 40 years of age, are not recommended for women who smoke and are not recommended for obese women. In fact, in order for this medication to be prescribed to you by your doctor, you need to pass a bunch of tests to ensure your safety. These pills, if used without medical supervision, can cause incredibly painful and life-threatening complications.
If you choose to take oral contraceptives for any reason, please contact your doctor. These drugs are very potent, and in unprofessional hands can lead to serious consequences.
