What veggies should I grow??

in #life6 years ago (edited)

So I have a massive veggie patch now that is very empty of veggies.

I grabbed a couple of chilli plants on the way home yesterday but they are looking very lonely amongst all that bare dirt.

So what should I plant to keep them company?

I already have a few fruit trees along the side of the house. And I’ll plant up some tomatoes and beans as per normal veggie patch. And one part of the garden will be set aside for strawberries.

But now I’m thinking that I have enough space to get creative.

Maybe I can grow some hops vines for brewing beer right from scratch? What about trying my hand at creating some fruit beers with home grown hops?

Is there potential to grow something rare and unusual that I can sell for profit (not weed, you criminals...)?

What do you think? What should I grow?

Chillis grow really well down here, excellent choice. :)

We've had some good luck with rosemary - and it holds up to full sunlight fairly well, too.

@minismallholding and even @wildflowerjessi would have some great suggestions I think :)

You can ask them in person if you make it the Jade on Thursday! ;)

I came to say exactly this. Also my avocado is doing quite well; and they're tasty.

avocado is an excellent idea. :)

Hi @mazzle! What do you think about peppers, melons or watermelons? Also maybe guava or merry trees? I think this plants should grow good in Australia.

I’ve never heard of merry trees. Will have to look it up. :)

Thanks for the suggestions.

Merry trees this plants almost like cherry. But it more switer and bigger. Also as I know it's called bird-cherry

And also what do you think about growing Peaches and Goose berries?

Get some broccoli/broccolini happening? Spinach and basil are always beautiful, too. I planted rocket and it went beserk.

I've given up on outdoor crops this summer, the heat is just too unbreable and we don't have much shade. The only successful things crop was my corn... until our house-sitter mowed it because they thought it was a weed 🤦.

Stuff for custom beer sounds cool XD otherwise I'm going to very unhelpfully suggest growing whatever you eat XP

We've only got a month left of summer now, so maybe start planning winter crops. Sorry, I'm not much good at advising crops to plant as I'm still learning myself and I'm coming to the conclusion you should just grow what you enjoy eating. I keep shoving potatoes wherever I can at the moment!

I always get a great yield of tomatoes and cucumbers. Make sure to plant oregano under the tomatoes!

Weed is legal here but I prefer to just buy it.

Hips are a more particular thing that takes a couple years to get going and you have to plant them using Rhizomes. That shouldn’t take up any garden space because they grow straight up a string. I would plant those too.

I have had good results from watermelon, beans, tomatoes (despite not liking tomatoes), cucumber, pumpkin. I have bought a few $20 for 20 packets of seeds selections from theseedcollection.com.au
