As foreign residents, so much of what goes on in Colombia - is difficult to follow and understand. I can't imagine how much more intense that would be out in the conflict zone. Americans especially - we tend to assume safety, which in a way we are safe via our own ignorance of "how things really are." On the other hand, seeing these areas which have been so closed off to everything else for so long, would be an interesting dose of reality too.
