Don't store valuable stuff at your parents and blindly trust them not to throw it out.
Be sure your parents know how important your valuables are. I used to work in a comic book store and I heard so many whinny tales of "I had such and such rare and expensive comic and my mom threw it out cleaning while I was away at college." One dude was planning on funding his college with his collection and hasn't talked to his mom since the day he found out she pitched it, except to demand she repay him.
