What Type of Jewelry Should You Wear While Travelling?

in #life6 years ago (edited)

They say diamonds are a girl’s best friend. Who doesn’t love them? All women like jewelry, no doubt about that. For some they may represent a status symbol, a way to enhance their beauty or simply a keepsake, an extra dose of sentimental value.

But what do you do when you spend a lot of time on the road, travelling from one destination to another? Do you decide on one piece that you never take off? You buy insurance? Or leave it home?

Wearing or carrying expensive jewellery around may easily turn into a hassle. Not to mention that when you are away from home for long periods of time means having more of those lovely jewels with you, so you can match your outfits on a daily basis.

Being a part-time nomad for the past ten years, I learnt that the wisest thing would be to leave the valuables at home, so I don’t have to freak out when losing an earring or a necklace, nor to feel unsafe while travelling through poor countries or worry that they might get stolen from the hotel room.

We all know that flashing out valuable goods such expensive jewellery, photo or video equipment, electronic devices can put one’s life at risk in certain countries or even back home in some questionable neighbourhoods.

Thus try to be a bit self-conscious about what you are wearing when you are planning to visit some low income areas. Having a 60K ring or bracelet on your hand may trigger unwanted attention and lead to some unexpected reactions.

Here are some tips and tricks you can use to keep yourself safe:

Leave your karats at home!

Ditch the gold and silver! Switch to sterling silver! It’s easy to maintain, hypo-allergenic, incredibly versatile and durable. In addition, it allows you to keep up with the trends as the options are endless. It has a classy look and has the ability to keep you safe.

Be modest!

If you can’t leave your diamond engagement ring at home (who would?), refrain yourself from advertising it. By that I mean, there is no need to tell everyone you are having a real Tiffany or Cartier ring, not even when inquired about it. Keep in mind that modesty never killed anyone!

Mix your valuables with non expensive ones!

If you are wearing an expensive ring, make sure you turn it towards the inside of your palm, to mask it! Add a less valuable bangle, bracelet or a pair of earrings to your outfit that would make your ring less visible.

Switch to costume jewellery.

It’s fun and it won’t be a big deal if you lose a piece. Using gold-plated jewellery you can get the allure of luxury without its cost. When you include costume jewelry in your style, try to keep it simple and tasteful by sticking with colours in the natural-stone spectrum.

While it may seem challenging to travel without your favourite piece of jewellery, it certainly beats getting it lost and feeling miserable for the rest of your journey.

Having travellled a lot over the years I can agree that is very good advise, when I was out in the filed in some rough places over the years I carried minimal stuff of any value, it just helps ot not make yourself a target

Thanks for adding more credibility to this post! I was lucky not to have any such incidents but two of my close friends went through some serious trouble just because wearing expensive jewelry abroad. One got robbed at gun point while the other had her jewelry stolen from her hotel room.

My pleasure and I to have had friends robbed even without carting much I was robbed a couple of times but then again I did travel to some rough places over the years

I worked for many years in retail in Manhattan selling diamonds. I met many wealthy women who were saying that they travel with custom jewelry aka fake diamonds. We used to call them ‘great pretenders’. 😉

Thank you for stopping by! I would say these "great pretenders " were wise to leave the real diamonds at home. Saved themselves the trouble of having them lost, stolen or robbed.

Where I come from, we have the habit of safe keeping our jewels in the bank's safe deposit box. I hardly have many expensive items except for a ring which I keep it close to me.

That's the best way to do it!

Great tips! I dont travel much, but I will definitely keep this advice in mind!

Thank you for stopping by!

Agree with you on this, though my advice would be to not wear any jewelry at all. One of the main reasons that makes traveling fun is not having to worry about everything. You already have enough valuables to take care of like your phone and your documents and stuff. Why bear the unnecessary risk of lugging around something expensive that will attract more thieves?

Reminds me of the time when my mom had her iPhone stolen.

I totally agree. Less valuables, less worries! That actually applies to being at home as well. Less you own, less stressed you will be. Thank you for the read!

I enjoy travelling too by wearing jewelry. Good tip to put your expensive jewelry at home and travel by wearing cheap fashion jewelry. When you get the jewelries lost or even stolen, you will not feel you lose an arm and a leg because they are cheap, you can always buy something new to wear there! Nice article to read.

As for me, there are no special rules, it is important to just use comfortable and stylish jewelry that suits you. Nothing big is better, since most often it is not practical. For my wife, I looked at very minimalistic rings and earrings from the store https://ninaroende.dk/ and I think they will suit her with any style
