My geek friends

in #life8 years ago

Have you ever had that friend that thought they were a super techno whizz? I have. You see, when I left school, it didn’t need to be a secret that I hung around with this guy anymore. Because the world is far wider once you leave. When we went to college there were some BIG dudes in his class, one’s you just wouldn’t mess with, and he was fine from there. No more bullying, in the right group for his interests. If only I had accepted the things that he did at that age. I’d have been much further ahead than I am now.

I always used to love going to the big computer shows in the area. I’m not too sure if that’s a thing now, but every weekend they were on we’d be off to browse for the next Cyrix processor or the latest Socket 7 Keyboard. It was fun, I’d be crazy if I were to deny it. The flashy green dusty cream and silver motherboards; remember it? Remember the awe inspiring excitement?

My friend would always enjoy tackling one of the staff on his new theory, defiantly stating that he was right, whilst the poor gentleman behind the counter trying to counter his argument, and given that my friend was only 17 at the time, with little to no life experience, and he was arguing with a guy that was a veteran in his trade. He did this every time we were there.

I could always remember feeling as if I was slinking into a hole. The arrogance of my friend, to think he knew better than someone who works on these day in and day out. I laugh about it with him now. He’s still my friend, though. He has been since I was 5, and yet he’s still the same! Sometimes I wish I had his balls to stand up for what I believed in. Perhaps not his arrogance though.

It’s hard at times. Because when I’m with him he can only see things down his way. Any suggestions from me and it’s totally not right. So I’ve given up discussing with him about a new upgrade for a computer because his thinking is far too rigid. Like when he buys a car, he’s had the same type of car since he started driving. Won’t buy anything else because what he’s read about them! Crazy!

He does support my open university though, getting more educated in the field of computers, but I think computers is quite a subjective thing as well as it as a logical thing. Don’t you?

Any of you guys ever have friends like this? Maybe I’m just too straight down the line in my thinking too. I dunno. We’ll see.

Sort:

I've always loved geeks cuz they're easy to push around and they tend to be so out of touch, socially, that they're easy to fuck with.

I'm usually drawn to the fat geeks, since punching them is less likely to lead to hand injuries, compared to your typical concentration-camp-looking-muscular-degenerative-geek-ass-motherfuckers, but I'm not really too picky with my punching distribution. I'm pretty sure that it follows a normal distribution curve, but it might be more bi-modal, with nerds at one peak and geeks at the other...hmm, yeah, that's probably it.

Yeah, nerds and geeks seem to be really good at moving us forward in the sciences and technology, which is the biggest reason why I tend not to inflict them with debilitating injuries. I really like my iphones and work tablets and whatnot.

But, let's face it, if we hit another ice age and it comes to the point where we need to start burning alive bodies for warmth, it's going to be then nerds, geeks, and dweebs that get thrown into the furnace first, if for no other reason than them being the weakest and easiest to overpower.

The downside, of course, is that they typically taste worse than your average overweight American...you know, because of the lack of fat content, but I can overlook that for a time.

Thanks for sharing your post. I up-voted and I promise to keep on following you in the future :)

Please do! Perhaps I'll let you harness that internal rage on my slightly ageing, geek belly. Who knows!

I have met a number of people like this, with me-first binary thinking. It can be very frustrating. Good luck!

Thank you. I don't know what that is, but it sounds about right
