Writing Adopted Marine Recruits. Join Us On Our Learning Adventure!

in #life7 years ago (edited)

Today started the beginning of writing two more Marine recruits at Parris Island, SC. The letter writing was used as an opportunity to teach the children about the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.

This lesson was eventually steered towards those individuals willing to join the military and possibly put themselves in harm's way to protect our nation.

I then took out my notebook and began to write.

I didn't say anything to the children, I just began to write. This peaked their curiosity(as I hoped it would) and my son asks:

"Daddy, what are you doing? We were in the middle of a lesson."
"I'm writing two Marine recruits in BootCamp".
"What's a Marine?", my daughter asks.

I begin to explain the history of Marines. I hit on the main topics:

  • Their birthday is November 10, 1775.
  • 1 of 5 branches that form the United States Military.
  • Can deploy rapidly, conduct water to land operations, help Navy ships and support airplanes.

I then ask them if they want to help me write a Marine In Bootcamp.

"What's BootCamp?"

This was easier than you might think. "It's like Basic Training for the Army, but longer"(I will be patiently waiting for replies from Marines about this comment after I post, lol).

They understood this answer, so I asked them again:
"Would you like to help Daddy write two Marine recruits in BootCamp?".

This Begins Our Project

I told them I would write the actual letters, but they could make pictures for the recruits. My daughter would make the picture for the female Marine recruit and my son would make the picture for the Male recruit.

We all begin our tasks.

Lily sends a picture with flowers.

WolfDawg sends a picture with sniper pistols.

If you've ever followed the letter to a future Marine series you know I usually include a quote with each letter. This was no different for these two letters. However, one was an original.
