Smart nappies for stupid zombies

in #life5 years ago

How did we even survive for thousands of years without such a smart invention? I was doing some research on a program aimed at hooking toddlers to the Internet when I came across an article about the smart nappy that can let parents know when to change their precious darlings. Really? I never knew it took special skills to deal with nappies and the only problem I ever had with diapers was money. I don’t know about you, but they’re rather expensive here.
Other than that, no problem. As you might be aware human beings are already equipped with pretty good sensors, usually located in the nose, that signal when it is time to change a loaded diaper.

This sensor called Lumi is the product of Procter&Gamble and the ever-present Google’s sister company, Verity. I get it - if people are so dumb as to buy such a thing and have a phone app to tell them about baby poo, well, let them. It’s not my money, why would I even care?
What I do find disturbing is this relentless drive to make people utterly dependable on technology. It seems like every day there’s a new gadget or a new app to make your life easier or basically to help you go through a normal day. Pretty soon, people won’t be able to do anything for themselves. See, the baby might be crying and you might think of changing the damn diaper, but would that be wise? I mean, if the app doesn’t tell you it’s time, maybe you shouldn’t?! As P&G make Pampers I expect the app to urge parents change the baby’s diapers like 20 times a day…
Also, the same Lumi sensor collects a lot of information about feeding times, sleeping patterns, temperature in the baby’s room - to help you figure out the whole baby raising task. Again, do you actually need an app to tell you how often the baby needs food? In my day, it used to be the only thing new mothers managed to talk about when they met in the park - ‘my baby this…’, ‘my baby that’… No app needed!
The other thing I mentioned - looks like Google is working on a voice-activated search function for toddlers. Something to keep small children entertained while their parents are on Facebook or Instagram, no doubt…
Oh, wait, now it makes sense - when I had my first child there were no smart phones or social media… that’s how I had all the time in the world to figure out the nappy-changing art!

Thanks for reading!
