What the heck is and why do people use kratom?
People are having great success with Kratom for a multitude of reasons. From our experience people tell us they mostly people use it for pain management, opiate withdrawal and as a energy booster.
Kratom has a wide variety of 40 active alkaloids that each have their own effects. Strains and origin of plants contains slight variable differences in alkaloids. The primary alkaloids are Mitragynine and 7-OH Mitragynine. Kratom is not a CNS depressant, it does not affect the beta arrestin pathway which classical opiates do causing respiratory depression. Mitragynine is a full agonist at the Mu Opioid Receptor (MOR) and Delta Opioid Receptor (DOR), which would produce subjective opioidergic effects like Analgesia, Constipation as well as the inevitable tolerance and addiction that arises with regular use of Mu-opioids, although it should be noted that it’s side-effects including tolerance and addiction, occur at a lesser rate than with traditional opioids like Oxycodone etc. The withdrawal syndrome is also of lesser intensity and shorter duration as compared with lets say Oxycodone for example.. Kratom possesses stimulant activity at a lower dose range. 7-Hydroxy-Mitragynine (7-OH-Mitragynine) is an even more potent and efficacious opioid agonist, with a 17-fold greater potency than Morphine. However, as 7-OH is biased toward G-protein coupling, its side-effects (constipation, tolerance, addiction etc.) are lesser than that of morphine.
Here are a few other alkaloids to note:
Raubasine (Ajmalicine): This alkaloid is also structurally similar to Yohimbine and Rauwolscine and possesses a hypotensive rather than hypertensive effect due to its antagonist properties at the α1-adrenoreceptor (it exhibits strong selectivity for α1 receptors over α2). In addition, it possesses cerebro circulant, anticonvulsant, sedative and smooth-muscle relaxant properties.
(-)Epicatechin: This is the same flavonol found in green tea and cocoa that has a wide range of benefits from reducing cancer risks, reducing the effects of free radicals on the body, in addition to antioxidant effects and helping with urinary infections as well as being of great benefit for diabetics. In addition, a study was done and noted (-)Epicatechin has cardiac protective benefits in https://www.thieme-connect.de/DOI/DOI?10.1055/s-0029-1186048
Mitraphylline: This is a non-narcotic constituent of Kratom, also found in the herb “Cat’s Claw” and is presently being researched for its cytotoxic effects including its ability to induce programmed cell-death (apoptosis) in breast cancer and sarcoma cell-lines. https://www.thieme-connect.de/DOI/DOI?10.1055/s-0029-1186048
Iso Mitraphylline and Speciophylline: As with Mitraphylline, it’s been shown to exhibit anti-inflammatory properties (Sandoval-Chacon et at.), immune-enhancing activity (Hemingway & Phillipson 1974; Rizzi et al. 1993), anti-leukemic activity (Bacher et al., 2006; Stuppner et al. 1993) and anti-mutagenic activity (Rizzi et al. 1993)
Rhynchophylline: This alkaloid functions as a non-competitive NMDA receptor antagonist as well as a Calcium-channel blocker. This is found in the herb “Cat’s Claw” as well and has been used in folk medicine for a variety of uses (dizziness, convulsions and hypertension).
Hopefully more studies will be done on this gift from nature tree so that we can understand fully understand all its working components. I mean pure objective integral research, so that means no big pharma ever!
