On Hard Work and Good Fortune | Book Club: Lessons Learned #4
“What shall we discuss this night?" Arkad inquired.”
“After a brief hesitation, a tall cloth weaver addressed him, arising as was the custom. "I have a subject I would like to hear discussed yet hesitate to offer lest it seem ridiculous to you, Arkad, and my good friends here.”
“Upon being urged to offer it, both by Arkad and by calls from the others, he continued: "This day I have been lucky, for I have found a purse in which there are pieces of gold. To continue to be lucky is my great desire. Feeling that all men share with me this desire, I do suggest we debate how to attract good luck that we may discover ways it can be enticed to one."
"A most interesting subject has been offered, Arkad commented, "one most worthy of our discussion. To some men, good luck bespeaks but a chance happening that, like an accident, may befall one without purpose or reason. Others do believe that the instigator of all good fortune is our most bounteous goddess, Ashtar, ever anxious to reward with generous gifts those who please her.”
“To me she is a goddess of love and dignity whose pleasure it is to aid those who are in need and to reward those who are deserving. I look to find her, not at the gaming tables or the races where men lose more gold than they win but in other places where the doings of men are more worthwhile and more worthy of reward."
"In tilling the soil, in honest trading, in all of man's occupations, there is opportunity to make a profit upon his efforts and his transactions. Perhaps not all the time will he be rewarded because sometimes his judgment may be faulty and other times the winds and the weather may defeat his efforts. Yet, if he persists, he may usually expect to realize his profit. This is so because the chances of profit are always in his favor.”
A member of the discussion presents a question to Arkad asking about the men who do seem to get lucky in places such as "the gaming tables" (casinos) and horse races. To him, Arkad replies:
“The question comes to me whether money secured in such ways brings permanent value to those who are thus lucky. Among my acquaintances are many of the successful men of Babylon, yet among them I am unable to name a single one who started his success from such a source.”
You will not get anywhere in life if you just sit around and wait for good luck and good fortune. Arkad is saying that good men who do good work will have good fortune.
"Doing the right thing is always the right thing." - Gary Vaynerchuk (famous entrepreneur)
It is my belief that everyone must find the thing that they love most in the world. For me, that's learning and sharing knowledge with others. Once you find what you love most in the world, you have to show up every day and put the work in. By showing up and working honestly and doing more for others than you ask in return, you will bring good fortune to yourself. You will always win. Always. Doing the right thing is always going to be the right thing!

Where are you getting steem delegations from? I have been trying at blocktrades but no joy.
I've been getting them from Blocktrades. They're taking pre-orders. Unfortunately, it takes about a week to get an order filled in my experience.
Do you have a link to the waiting list? I don't seem able to find it on their site. Thanks
They actually don't have a waiting list currently. Pre-orders are only about a week old feature through Blocktrades. Hopefully they add a waiting list soon, as I would love to see how far away my new delegations are. It's been taking anywhere from 4-7 days in my experience. Blocktrades just posted 2 days ago and said they expect to fill pre-orders sometime on/after Thursday
Thanks for the info : )
Doing the right thing is always the right thing resonates with me. It is far easier to tell the truth than lie. It is easier to be kind and caring than mean. It is easier to go out of your way to be polite than be rude.
I have learned in my life that the greatest currency is our time. That is why it is so important to help people and share the knowledge and things you have. Anything I have not come by honestly has not been enjoyable to me and I end up not wanting it. I never buy lottery tickets because I want to earn what I have.
This is a great lesson. I try to teach people by being a good example. That is better than gold!
Thank you for sharing and thank you for being generous with your newly acquired Steem Power. I have truly enjoyed interacting.
PS. I just looked up Gary Vaynerchuk. A very interesting guy!
Just want to start off by saying thank you for your continued support and valuable comments! I really appreciate you taking the time to read and interact with my posts! I totally agree, our greatest currency and asset is our time. Its a fixed supply, while money is something you can always make. People spend their whole lives trading time for money and doing things that they hate... It pains me to see so many family members and friends who are in their 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s who have spent their entire lives working a meaningless job just for the paycheck. That's why Steemit means so much to me, it's truly a way for anyone to make a living doing what they love and are passionate about! Which is another reason why I appreciate you so much @sequentialvibe, your support is what makes my dreams possible. Thank you ❤️
Gary Vaynerchuk is my favorite youtuber/motivational speaker/marketer/entrepreneur ever... He's so talented at everything he does and the way he can articulate his thoughts is mesmerizing to me and what I strive to be like. I hope you continue to follow him as well, he not only has great thoughts on how to grow your business, but he's also on a mission to teach everyone how to be a better person!
Thanks back to you for listening to and commenting on my perspectives. I have seen a lot of people get lost in the money pit where they work so hard, become depressed, spend recreationally to feel better, get unhealthy, need more money because they are in debt, and become a slave to their jobs
By spending less, I don't have to make as much! Disciplined spending makes sense.
I then have more time to work out, make my own food, ferment stuff and continue to learn. Steemit is a growing part for me in all that! I can see you are no stranger to positive lifestyle discipline.
I am going to follow Gary's YouTube channel.
🙏🏽
I couldn't agree more! People need to focus less on helping themselves and more on helping others. If you do more for others than you do for yourself, you will always have "good luck".
"I look to find her.... in other places where the doings of men are more worthwhile and more worthy of reward."
This lesson is encouraging for me to pick up the book and read it. You picked out some good quotes.
Don't worry about the Cheetah. When we find a good quote we copy and paste it. We admit it is a quote so the Cheetah picks up the source. It's good now I can read the book too.
Check out my Cheetah quote:

Ahh this is good to learn. So the Cheetah bot is just recognizing that my post had several quotes similar to another post out there on the internet? Is there a way to avoid the Cheetah bot? Is it seen as negative to have the Cheetah bot posting on posts?
https://steemit.com/steemitabuse/@cheetah/cheetah-bot-explained
I think it identifies where the source of the text came from. I copied and pasted a quote and put quotations so it is not plagiarism because it was quoted and sourced, but the bot picked up where the text was from. Also the quote took up too much of the post. I'm not sure about your case. If you hand typed the quotes then it would be harder to pick up but I think the bot can recognize if the same exact characters were used in another site. It's a pretty cool bot and I think there should be a cheetah on every social network. Just be yourself .
Hm, yeah that's interesting. I copy/pasted the quotes straight from iBooks, maybe that's why cheetah picked it up. Now that I know what it is, I think that its definitely healthy for the Steemit ecosystem. I think they should have more info available on how exactly it works though 😊 Thanks for teaching me about it!
"You will not get anywhere in life if you just sit around and wait for good luck and good fortune."
Indeed. This is very true. Alas ! This is what we find a lot of individuals doing in our society. The belief of luck has made a lot of people mediocres. They often say they are waiting for the perfect time which will obviously never come unless they create it. If one keeps waiting for luck, then he might end up living an unfulfilled life full of regrets.
@doris12
Yes! The belief and ponderance of the idea of "luck" have made a lot of people lazy and hopeful rather than driven and focused. Thanks for your support ❤️
Indeed! You are much welcome.
Time is the key!
Ever since I figured that out I find myself almost laughing at expensive car advertising.
"Want a car that can go faster than any sane person would want to go ? It will only cost you YEARS of you labour"
No thanks buddy I'll stick with my 1.4i and have the years please
haha! Totally agree!
I totally agree with this, there is nothing as good as sharing, especially knowledge, coz the more you share the more it spreads and provides benefit for both the giver and recover. It's the only gift that doubles when distributed.
I really appreciate your good work, bro.
I appreciate you 👊🏽 thank you for your continued support! The only reason I'm able to do what I love is because of you!
