The Tim Ferriss approach to a new year
Just read a brief article on business insider with a different approach to new year's "resolutions" spearheaded by Tim Ferriss. While I don't necessarily agree with all of Tim Ferriss' approaches to tackling problems or life in general, I do like the shift from a new year's resolution to more of a "year in review" to focus on the good and bad parts of your routine is a great concept.
The gist - make 2 lists -
List 1 - compile the 20% of activities, relationships, people, and routines that account for 80% of "peak positive emotional states."
List 2 - Do the same for peak negative emotional states
The use of the term "emotional states" is a bit unnecessary for my taste, but the concept makes a lot of sense
- Look back at your year and find out what was good / bad about it
- Determine if there were specific people, places, or actions taken leading up to or soon after those good / bad aspects to identify what worked for you
This activity may result in some form of resolution for the upcoming year, but since you've already done it before it should be more attainable.
I am excited to give this a try at some point this week and, more than anything, don't want to overthink it. These should be surface level, easy to find good and bad lists.
Whether you go the resolution route or try this new approach, hope everyone has a great start to the new year.
