An Immigrant's View on Canada's Day

The 150th anniversary of Canada’s Confederation prompted a moment of reflection on my life in Canada. Even as an immigrant from Honduras, I have always felt a strong connection to Canada, and, therefore a strong connection to Canada’s Day which is most in part due to what Canada has done for me and my family for which I’m forever thankful for.  

Due to the welfare that the government supplies, not only was it able to support my family in a difficult period of time where I could not, but it also provided a sense of emotional support knowing that I was not going through this time alone and without any help and instead that my country had my back which is something I was not used to.  

Also, the fact that the government provided my children with the opportunity to participate in activities like swimming, at a discount due to the financial aid options, at local YMCAs is yet another instance where I truly felt supported and included by country; especially, since the people at these swimming courses were so nice to my children and my wife.  

However, this is only the beginning of an endless list of examples where the Canadian government and Canadians themselves have supported my family. Which is why I love Canada and why Canada’s Day has a special place in my heart.
