Reading and understanding; how?
The issue of reading and not understanding what has been read has been (and is still) a big problem for most students. While some students read and understand almost immediately or after a while of going through the notes again, others can barely say to themselves that they've assimilated what they have read.
We will be looking at some very useful tips you could follow to be able to read and assimilate what you read.
Read your material out loud-
This method involves you reading out what is in the material to yourself. Do not worry, you won't sound crazy. This helps you pay attention to each word in the text while making you calm at the same time. Reading the text makes it interesting and a lot more engaging too.
Study in a quiet environment-
You need a noiseless environment to be able to assimilate fast. You could look for a place with nobody around and devoid of distractions. Studying in a quiet environment helps your concentration.
To avoid distractions, you could turn off your mobile phone, or put it on silent. Log off whichever social media platform you're on before reading or you could just turn off your internet connection.
Study in a group-
Studying in a group is very beneficial. When you study in a group, knowledge is shared. You get to learn things you didn't know and you also get to share your knowledge too thereby helping someone in the group learn something they didn't know.
Take breaks in between-
A study has shown that studying for 30-50 minutes at a time with a 10 minute break in between is the most effective way to retain information.
You could also try breaking your study into shorter period and taking breaks in between if you get tired easily when reading.
This way you will be able to understand complex materials.
Take Notes-
Take notes while studying. Have a pen with you when you study and try highlighting important points in the text. Be careful not to highlight almost all the text because then you would have defeated the purpose of highlighting.
Pick out important points and highlight them so you can revisit them later.
Rest-
Rest, sleep well. It helps you assimilate what you've read. If you plan on reading, you could sleep for a few minutes. When you wake up, you'll feel fresh and ready to go.
