Erasmus Experience, Episode 8: Hiking to Mikros Afentis and Visiting Village Mathia (English/ Turkish)

-A hike up to Mikros Afentis peak on Dikti Mountains.

We set off from the village of Mathia at 560 m with its beautiful byzantine churches and we walk along a wooded but steep upwards trail. The landscape changes constantly on our way. We reach the top, Mikros Afentis, at 1587 m., where we can admire the magnificent view.

The sheep gates which you have to pass are marked with an attached hose like a horseshoe. These gates are everywhere on Crete and usually locked on one side with a cord or a piece of wire, which can be opened. After passing through the gate it must be closed by the other side, so that no sheep or goats may leave the premises.
The path seems to follow after a short time an old, ‘donkey road’, which led down to the level of Kasteli with the Byzantine church Pandeleimon near Pigi.

We were on the road with the club.

After walking a short while on the road you will encounter a large and from afar visible memorial stone. It recalls that at this place the ‘Turkish criminal Tsoulis Pasha was executed by locals for his atrocities against Christians’ more than 200 years ago. Also, the text outed that the path was probably already used by the Minoans. But in any case, its use goes back to the Venetian period.

After the monument we continued walking.

Not far away there is a picnic area with stunning views on Kasteli with its (military) airfield and to the north to the coast at Hersonissos. Up to this point we were about 45-60 minutes on foot and stopped for a short rest.

As we approached Mikros Afentis hill, wind and fog made it very difficult to walk.

When we reached the height (1587m.) of the hill we felt cold. On the hill a small church welcomed us. After a short break and visiting the church, we began to concentrate on the return path.

After our cold test, we moved to the village of Mathia.

As we approached the sea level, the weather was returning to normal and we were warming up. And even we gave a short break for snacking.

After a short break, we visited an old settlement.

I can not remember the name, unfortunately!

After we drank our drinks with nuts, we arrived at Mathia Village.

When I walked into a shop to take photographs while roaming in the village, I met with very friendly uncle. He offered to me his biscuits and said something in Greek. Our chat took a few minutes. I said that I came from Turkey, he felt emotional. Then he gave a book called "Dance in Fire" written in English. I was very happy and I left the shop with a huge hug.

Then I continued to visit the village.

The tour was over and we hopped on the buses and took the road to the house.

-Bu haftaki gezimizde Dikti Dağları'ndaki Mikros Afentis tepesine tırmandık.
Mathia köyünden 560 m'den yola çıktık ve Mikros Afentis'in tepesine (1587m.) ulaştığımızda manzaraya hayran kalmamak elde değildi.

-Geçmek zorunda olduğunuz koyun kapılarında at nalı gibi bağlı bir hortumla işaretlenir. Bu kapılar Girit'te her yerde bulunur ve genellikle bir taraftan bir kablo veya açılabilen bir tel parçasıyla kilitlenirler. Kapıdan geçtikten sonra diğer taraftan kapatılmalıdır, böylece hiçbir koyun veya keçi alanı terketmeyecektir.

Kısa bir süre sonra yol, Pigi yakınlarındaki Bizans kilisesi Pandeleimon ile Kasteli seviyesine inen eski bir 'eşek yolu' yolunu izliyor gibi görünüyor.

Ekip halinde rotada ilerliyorduk.

Yolda kısa bir yürüyüş yaptıktan sonra, geniş ve uzaktaki görülebilen anıtlardan biriyle karşılaşacaksınız. Bu anıt, 'Türk suçlu Tsoulis Paşa'nın 200 yıldan daha önce Hıristiyanlara yaptığı zulüm nedeniyle halk tarafından idam edildiğini' hatırlatıyor. Ayrıca, metinde bu yolun Minoanlar tarafından kullanıldığına dair bilgiler de veriliyor. Fakat her durumda, kullanımı Venedik dönemine kadar uzanır.

Anıttan sonra yürümeye devam ettik.

Kasteli'nin (askeri) uçuş sahası ve kuzeyde Hersonissos'taki sahil şeridi manzaralı bir piknik alanı vardı.

Bu noktaya kadar yürümek yaklaşık 45-60 dakika kadar sürdü ve kısa bir dinlenme için durduk.

Mikros Afentis tepesine doğru yaklaştıkça rüzgar ve sis yürümeyi oldukça zorlaştırıyordu.

1587 m. yüksekliğindeki tepeye vardığımızda soğuğu iliklerimize kadar hissediyorduk. Tepede bizi küçük bir kilise karşılıyordu.

Kısa bir mola ve kiliseyi gezdikten sonra dönüş yoluna konsantre olmaya başlamıştık.

Soğukla imtihanımızdan sonra Mathia köyüne doğru harekete geçmiştik.

Deniz seviyesine yaklaştıkça hava normale dönüyor ve içimiz ısınıyordu:)
Kısa süreli yeme-içme molası vermiştik bile.

Moladan sonra bizi eski bir yerleşim yeri karşıladı.
Adını hatırlayamıyorum ne yazık ki!

Kuruyemiş ile içkilerimizi içtikten sonra Mathia Köyü'ne varmıştık.

Köyde dolaşırken fotoğraf çekmek için bir dükkana girdiğimde güler yüzlü bir amca beni karşıladı. Bisküvisinden ikram etti ve Yunanca bir şeyler söyledi. Anlaşmamız bir kaç dakikayı bulmuştu. Türkiye'den geldiğimi söyleyince duygulandı, belki eski anıları canlandı bilemiyorum. Ardından da İngilizce yazılmış ''Dance in Fire'' adında bir kitabı hediye etti. Çok sevinmiştim ve kocaman sarılarak amcaya dükkandan ayrılmıştım.

Daha sonra köyde gezinmeye devam ettim.

Tur bitmişti ve otobüslere atlayıp evin yolunu tutmuştuk.
