LITTLE THINGS THAT MATTER MOST
GOLDEN TEXT: "God chose what is low and despised in the world even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, so that no human being might boast in the presence of God" Eph. 4:28
Paul Apostle was speaking: These words to the Ephesians in Ephesus where the people worshipped many gods and the seat of the goddess Diana of Ephesus. There were many magicians and miracle workers here, as well as sorcerers who bought themselves on this account. Paul must have had in mind to bring these persons and their boast to noting. But who to use to make a breakthrough? He would have preferred people of calibre use himself, lawyers, philosopher, etc.
In the absence of which he had to make use of those available, and discovers to his chagrin that even God himself chose what is how and destrised in the world the no-person to confront the idol worshipper and confound the wisdom of the wise. Paul reflected on his own experience, how God chose him from the echelon of the sanhedrain and lawyers and hoped that a smaller calling might be fall some highly placed Ephesians, using such, how grades whom God chose for his ministry. It is therefore most heart-warry to discover how he can use anybody, provide he/she is a God-fearing material.
The Bible says with a great house there are not only vessels of gold and silver, but also of wood and earthen wares and some for noble use, some ignoble. If anyone purifies himself from what his ignoble then, you will be a vessel for noble use, consecrated and useful to the master of the house, ready for any good work (2 Tim. 2:20-23).
Have you ever asked yourself this question: "who am I that has chosen" the blunt truth is you are nothing God decides to use you for His kingdom service out of Sheer grace. And you have no glory for what happens from nothing to something. In whatever position you find yourself in the musty is given by God.
Jesus said: A place on his right or left is not his to give, but the fathers'.
But the problem is that they are so conscious of self or ego that they forget how their life began and start to boast. And the boaster, God dispesth and if it not God that is using you, but you using yourself as you like for your own gratification, then I am talking to God's opponent, not a disciple. I am talking to Satan I cannot convert. It is of such a person that Plato wrote: "If therefore a man has it in his nature to outgrow in perttiness (little things that matter) of conversional morality, and put himself above the law, it his natural right, indeed his duty, to acquire dominion and use it solely for his personal gratification." such a man would God not use for anything sake. He is selfish boastful and spiteful of God. Rather God choses the 'Low and despised' in the world.' little things as we would call them include
- Person
- Place
- Things
- Animal
- Nothing as approved of Him.
Person: (i) David was the youngest son of the eight sons of Jesse, but it was him that God asked the prophet Samuel to anoint as king to replace Saul. In appearance or on the height of his stature, David was the smallest. And the Bible says "Man looks at the outward, but the Lord looks on the heart - 1 Samuel 16:7."
(ii) Ukeme - in contemporary life experience was a poor little house made despised by Aboy who left all the house chores: including washing of plate to Ukeme, but God gave little Ukeme a moteoric rise. Through her washing plates in a hotel she got into the University of Ibadan and qualified as a medical doctor. And when Aboy asked "Ukeme tell me how a small you made it, and would you now come to boss me." Ukeme replied coolly "I wash plates in hotel to pay my school fees, little things matter most you know."
(iii) Ruth: Was a poor widowed girl of Moab whom hunger forced to glen and gather among the sheep after the reapers. But God decided to use her as the mother of Obed in the line of David where Christ known as the son of David was born.
Place: (i) The Bible tells us Jesus Christ came from Nazareth. Can anything good come from Nazareth? And thou Bethlehem art not the least among the tribe of Judah and out of her shall be born a king who will rule my people.
(ii) Ukana Ikot ntuen - in our contemporary experience Ukana Ikot ntuen is the least known in the map of Akwa Ibom State, but it pleased God to raise Godswill Obot Akpabio to make the best governor Akwa Ibom State ever had since her inception in 1987 and (iii) and Kenya one of the small nations in Africa has produced the first African-American president in the person of Barrack Obama.
Things: little things even microscopic things like (ATOM) and (HYDROGEN). The Oxford English dictionary defines atom as the smallest part of a chemical reaction and hydrogen as a gas that is the lightest of all the element, but it pleased God to use the smallest element to form water, which by significance is LIFE to man and the atomic bomb they dropped Hiroshima and Nagasaki, devastating though helped to bring an end to the second world-war.
(ii). Jesus said "you are the salt of the earth." imagine the common salt, and its place of importance significantly, adding taste and value to life. It has a lot of imageries that concerns life including value, work, death and life, reservation and resolution and dissolution to mention but a few.
Animal: (i) Ants: Could you imagine this proverbial beast that exist to teach man the greatest lesson ever, the Bible says we should go to the ants and learn and be wise. (ii) Horse: In the case of Balam the horse was not only refectory as it baulked, but talked the way God asked it to.
(iii) The bird dove: Is a small bird with a symbolic spirit known from the time of Noah and at the baptism of Christ as very significant.
Things that are not: (i) The word of God is absolutely abstract. You cannot see it with your naked eyes at all aside when written. But it weighs a tremendous power and it's almost everything. In John 6:63, Jesus says "The words I speak onto you are spirit and life." (ii) Faith: When you see an empty state, look at it twice. The atmospheric emptiness is richer than the gifted visible air with their silver and gold. Life giving air is unseen. Hope is unseen. The Bible says "Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen - Hebrew 11:1."
(iii) Affliction: In Jonah 2:2-4, Jonah said "I cried by reason of my affliction unto the Lord out of the belly of hell cried I and thou hearest my voice. For thou heard me into deep mist of the sea and the flood compasseth me about, all thy billows and thy waves passed over me, then I said I am cast out of sight, yet I will look again towards thy holy temple."
(iv) The spirit being: Is ever present though, unseen but has impacted on everything, everywhere. David said "Whither shall I go from thy spirit, even the darkness is not dark to thee, the night is bright as day, for darkness is as light with day - Psalms 139:12."
