When Sea Level Gets Very Low

It was 18th October 2016, when sea level at the beach, near my home, dropped way below zero level. -0.63 meters to be exact. It may not seem much but it makes drastic changes in how the beach looks like.

This phenomenon didn't happen locally only in this beach, it appeared everywhere in Estonia. Locally the sea level dropped even 0.94 meters below zero.

I'm always up to date with live data about sea level so I could immediately go and see this myself.

This one is captured in Kakumäe beach. Usually, this little gulf is under water but on that day it was half empty sand field. This sight was something you don't see very often.

For people not familiar with this place, this might not seem anything weird, but it was, trust me! The water line is usually there where you can see the reeds in the picture.

Some of the ship traffic was put on hold due to severely shallow sea level in the ports.

This event reminded me that this is exactly what happens when a tsunami is on its way but fortunately we don't have them in our region. These very low sea levels were caused by long-lasting strong northeast winds which blew the waters away from the coast.
