The Act of Kind Deeds
“Whether it’s for ourselves or our loved ones, the planet, or society at large. No matter how big or small, good deeds carry a double punch - we make a positive impact, and we feel great at the same time”
Recently I was listening to the radio where an emergency doctor was talking about doing kind deeds. He was confessing to being too busy to do these acts. He was bringing himself to task about his lack of compassion while he went about treating patients who probably needed just a little bit more of his time and understanding.
This broadcast got me to thinking about the broader community and wondering how many of us rush through our day without a thought to another. It seems our world has made a drastic change. We have become quite a bit more self absorbed and less trusting of others.

There are different types of kindness. Some of these acts are spontaneous and done with no thought other than a natural impulse. Those of us who are brought up with basic manners will automatically hold a door for someone else. However not everyone will give up their seats on public transport for someone else. I recently rode a rapid transport from the airport to downtown. The car was quite full and while I stood all the way right opposite me were two flight attendants taking up four seats with themselves and their luggage. I am sure that they had probably had a long flight and were tired but to have their luggage taking up seats while others stood was just rude.
Other types of kindness are those that you plan ahead. You might make a batch of cookies or muffins or something similar to give to a neighbor. A trip to a care facility with some flowers or maybe organizing you choir to entertain the seniors would have to be planned ahead.
Between these two extremes there is an intermediate form of kindness. These acts happen when you find yourself in a situation when someone needs some help. Very often seniors will find they need help to take their groceries from the store to their car. Although you are in a hurry – you need to get the school to pick up your child – but it will only take a moment to give a hand. Taking the time to help this senior will make you feel better and who knows maybe your act will be paid forward.

An act of kindness possibly has the result of changing someone’s life. But this is not the main reason to do them. The reward they give the people who do them is prime purpose. Yes they help the receiver but they give back more to the initiator.
Acts of kindness make you feel better about yourself. It can reduce stress, combat depression, keep you mentally stimulated, and provide a sense of purpose. These acts help to build your community and give you a sense of belonging.
