Just a Tropical Storm, Perfect for Unloading Some Egg Cartons
I’ve got an affection for tropical storms. They always turn out to be a joke, so there is no stress, just hope. It was just another rainy day, but I held out for some dramatic wind—a bit of that wild rustling in the forest. Maybe an eerie howl that whips around the house. No such luck today. But, we did get those crazy bursts of rain that seem to come exclusively with tropical storms/hurricanes. That wild out-of-nowhere pound on the roof and the view out the window obscured in a grey wall. I like those.
I don’t much care for rainy days, unless they have the promise of at least an out-of-nowhere squall. So I was satisfied to stay in the house today, and do what people do with two children trapped inside a house all day. Which is…
Pull my hair out.
Alright, that might be dramatic. It wasn’t that bad. The tot only walked around the house screaming about things for approximately twenty percent of the day. The tot is in the time of the totally tiresome tantrums. Tender two-year-old feelings are easily bruised, and then turn indignant. Little hands get into lots of things, and then get in trouble, and then the tender feelings…
Pretty things spilled on the floor by a tot full of tender tantrums.
Meanwhile, the boy declared himself a circus performer and began performing tricks all across the house. First, I had the image of the boy tight-rope walker as he hurled himself from the couch to the love seat; second, an acrobat flipping from love seat onto dog bed, startling dog into the hysterics of jumping through imaginary hoops; third, running through the house like being shot out of a canon; fourth, a clown waddling through a pile of pillow debris, making strange faces that only a five-year-old or a clown would think of; then repeat sequence. As a result of a strong dislike of the emergency room, and disliking driving in periodic squalls, it was necessary to shut down the circus.
Other activities were in order. Being a deeply frugal person, we do not buy craft supplies, we wait for them to find us. We aren’t normal people. I might have a very pretty buffet in my dining room, but one entire drawer is shoved full of egg cartons. You just never know when you are going to need one (said the chicken-keeping pack-rat side of my personality). Needing one is definitely not an issue at this point. Needing fifty would be handy, to free up a little space. So here we have the brilliant resolution: Give the egg cartons to the boy.
First, we have the barge.
Next, the dump truck.
Lastly, and my personal favorite, the octopus.
And what did I do? I started going through my stash of cloth diapers, preparing to get rid of them, and reminiscing on squirmy little precious things, and almost tearing up, and then remembering that it is actually a really good thing that children grow older, and consoling myself, and then deciding that I really needed a snack. That's just who I am, from sadness one minute, to hunger the next. The wind changes direction here frequently.
Outside is very quiet now, as is the house while the children sleep. I can hear the noise from the interstate a good ways off blowing into my area. Then the rumble of a train. No swaying trees, no wolf wind howls. No excitement. This time of year no excitement is a good thing. Just a rainy day, perfect for unloading some egg cartons.
Good to see you're fine! There's a hurricane going that way and I was worried about you!
"from sadness one minute, to hunger the next."
Yeah, that's part of the tribe "charms"... and my tummy is asking for food while I'm writting this.😅I was eating while I wrote this! Wait, it's a hurricane now? Lol. Nothing is happening here right now, that's for sure.
I can't lie, I just googled Puerto Rico. I get the Caribbean Islands all mixed up. I know exactly where it is now :) So the storm must have just whizzed past you?
Nah, it all started away from us... and I really hope nothing comes this year! Being in the middle of the Caribbean is not an easy thing 😅
Y'all must have been getting hit by Maria right about this time last year. I will be keeping my fingers crossed for you.
In Sept 12 will be 1 year of hurricane Irma (cat 3) and in Sept 19 will be hurricane Maria's turn (cat 5)... let me knock on wood, just in case!
Oh, ok. I was thinking it was earlier.
haha! hey yeah no big deal just a storm but it looks like you had great entertainment while you were trapped inside! I like the creative uses of those egg cartons! man that's impressive!
I keep a large supply of glue. As long as you've got glue, you can make something...
well there hows it going ginnyannette? good to hear from you this evening. I see you are all happy again with such joy in your tone...lol.. just the facts ma'am just the facts. I wish we'd get a storm here.
Who knows, you may get your wish soon. Maybe that storm will make it to Texas. I haven't looked at the news this morning.
howdy again ginnyannette! why do I get the distinct feeling that you'd like to see Texas wiped off the map by such a storm?
Nah, I don't mind Texas. As long as she's not minding me, I'm not minding her.
oohhhh. let me see...yeah that makes sense! lol.
Entertaining kids is hard work ginnyannette. You are clever to keep a supply of collage materials - nothing like egg cartons and paddle pop sticks.
We just need to make about 47 more egg carton crafts to get my supply back to a normal count :)
Your boy is very creative. The barge and the octopus are actually identifiably well executed. I am glad it was just a rainy day. We have had too much rain here lately. I am a bit tired of it. Be careful giving away all the baby things. It seems like that brings on a surprise for a lot of folks. LOL
Ha! My husband was quick to put a fix on surprises.
He is a creative fellow. It is nice and sunny here today. We shall see what Florence brings us.
I hope Florence remains mild and passes quickly.
Thanks.
I know how you feel about the sadness of kids growing old. I am watching my 1 year old approaching the big 2. She now tells me what teddy she wants in bed with her and makes sure her room is tidy before she goes asleep. I feel the baby is gone! She's a little girl now. I know I am mad but its time to have a little brother or sister.
I think the sadness over baby getting older would be much worse if I had stopped at one. I knew I wanted more, so I could put it off, and now that I have had my second, it is still sad but not as bad. I guess it is always a little sad. I'm focusing on how much more room I have after getting rid of all the baby stuff.
So your daughter picks up her room happily? That is lovely. May it always be this way.
Shes like her mother. If anything thats not meant to be in it's place is around she brings it out of the room. Its funny . My wife's parents mind her every Wednesday. She has her routine. Read book with nanny, goes upstairs and helps nanny make bed, has brekfast etc. Grandad and granny switched alarm clocks the night before because their alarms just happened to be the opposite way round. So instead of changing both alarm clocks for the next morning they swapped. Grace didn't take this lightly and swapped the clocks back around as soon as she copped it. 😂😂. She is not even 2. Im in big trouble in a couple of years!!
Aww how sweet. That's a wonderful trait. I've had to teach it to myself over the years, as it does not come naturally to me. It is surprising how much a toddler understands. I suppose in her not quite two years, the alarm clocks seemed to be permanently fixed in their position. That must have been an insult to housekeeping to find them mixed up :)
Granny missed a trick with the alarm clocks. She’s normally on point. I’m the same as you. Now I’ve two girls frowning at me! 😂😂. Trainers on the show rack .
