Travel day-Death row in Romania

in #life7 years ago

Ok so here’s the thing. When I visit a new place I don’t really go for the museums or any historical stuff. I tend to live in the present not really caring about the past, but last year on my school trip my vision about museums kind of changed. I visited Maramures a northern region of my country Romania. There was this jail museum where people that opposed to communism were held
The prisoners were tortured to the max and maybe the way I write about it makes it seem mild but believe me it was far from it. The prisoners usually slept on the bare ground or on beds made out of metal with no mattresses.

They wore those stripped pyjamas that you see everywhere and had no access to running water or electricity.

If someone was sentenced to death there were sooo many options that the executer could chose from. Something along the lines of tearing limbs or electrocuting, crucifixion, drowning in bowls of water, starvation or something that really stuck with me; prisoners were bound together with rope and then thrown from whatever floor that was the highest. That way the ones that were at the bottom were crushed , thus executed while the rest were “luckily” dead as well or at least traumatized for life. There were also punishments, for what I don’t actually know for example: prisoners had to eat their own excrements and if sick they had to eat that too. I know gross.

Also there was this dark room where one individual was handcuffed and then left for a long period of time with absolutely no light or food or basically anything.

These are just some of the things that I remember the most, things that you know caught my attention.
I always felt like this was happening a long time ago, but in reality my grandparents and even my parents were alive when all this was taking place. All in all we should be grateful for those people who sacrificed for us and our future and also we should be thankful for the jails we have now...although I don’t really want to end up there... It kind of reminds me of the natzi’s extermination camps.
