The Ultimate sikh warrior who fought Holding his head on his hand
Hello steemians today I am here with an interesting story of a sikh warrior who actually fought with his head in his hands” SO keep enjoying my post
Legend has it that after getting his head almost chopped off in battle, this Sikh warrior continued fighting with his head in his hand. The brave Sikh warrior we are talking about is Baba Deep Singh Ji.
Born on 20th January 1682 A.D. in Amritsar, Baba Deep Singh was baptized as a Sikh in Anandpur in 1700 A.D. At an early age, he plunged himself into the art of weaponry and memorised the Guru Granth Sahib by heart. He accompanied Banda Bahadur during the assaults on the towns of Sadhaura and Sirhind. It was in 1748 that Baba Deep Singh was entrusted with the leadership of the Shaheedan Misl, when 65 jathas (battalions) of the Dal Khalsa were reorganized into twelve misls. These misls later formed the foundation of the Sikh empire of the 18th century in the Punjab region.
In April 1757, Afghan emperor Ahmad Shah Durrani invaded North India for the fourth time. While on his way back to Kabul from Delhi, Durrani’s army carried looted gold and young women as sex slaves. Baba Deep’s squad intercepted Durrani’s army at Kurkshetra, ultimately freeing the slaves and raiding the treasure. Infuriated by his loss, Durrani ordered the demolition of the Harimandir Sahib aka the Golden Temple. Durrani’s army blew up the holy shrine and filled the sacred pool with the entrails of slaughtered cows.
Baba Deep Singh took up on himself the task of avenging the destruction of Harimandir Sahib. He came out of his self-imposed scholastic retirement and declared his resolve to a congregation at Damdama Sahib. Five hundred men accompanied him to challenge Durrani’s army. Almost halfway towards the battle field, over five thousand peasants armed with hatchets, swords, and spears joined him. Before entering the battlefield, he is believed to have said: "May my head fall at the Darbar Sahib.” Baba and his army of peasants were met with 20,000 trained Afghan soldiers, and they ultimately clashed heads at Gohalwar on 11th November. Amidst the bloody war, General Attal Khan and Baba landed in a fierce sword duel. While Baba Deep Singh severed Attal Khan’s head, he suffered a gruesome blow around his neck which almost made his neck lean to one side.
From here, there are two versions of his death. The first says that Baba continued to fight after having been decapitated, slaying his enemies with his head in one hand and his sword in the other. The second version says that Baba Deep Singh supported his almost-detached head with his left hand and slashed through the enemies with his 15-kg sword.
He finally breathed his last at the Golden Temple, and the place where his head fell is till date marked as a holy place within the temple.
