Surfing Lobitos

Have we mentioned that Lobitos has some incredible surf? Not just incredible, but world class. This photo was taken by @diego-ecoswell, an EcoSwell Director, during the 2017 Volcom surf competition at El Hueco in Lobitos. On the wave is Henry Espinoza, one of the best surfers in Lobitos.

You’d be hard pressed to find another place in South America with better waves. Lobitos draw surfers from all over the world. Whether the tide is high or low, you can always find surfers catching waves at different spots.
Though Lobitos has recently become a much more popular destination for tourists, the most iconic surf breaks (Lobitos La Punta, Baterias, El Hueco, Frontera, Generales and Piscinas) and the areas around them are now protected from any land development and/or oil drilling projects. EcoSwell has worked in collaboration with the Peruvian Society of Environmental Law in a campaign to register these spots in the National Registry of Wave Breaks under the new national law for breaks protection. In this way, the beachfront, rock formations and marine morphology that produce these incredible waves are now protected by legislation forever. The first step for long-lasting sustainable surfing tourism in Lobitos! Peru is the first country in the world to enact a break protection law and we are proud to have contributed to this collective effort! You can find out more about the wave protection in Peru here

Great post! Surfing is by far the best recreational activity for tourists in Lobitos, and there are waves for all levels, from beginners to world class. It was great to attend and be able to shoot some pics of this Volcom Pro Championship in October last year at the spot known as "El Hueco" and seeing so many pro surfer from all over the country just getting barrels after barrels. The crowd cheering and watching at the natural front seats of this blessed water temple... One of my personal best experiences with surfing and the ocean so far, and I wasn't even in the water competing! It was also amazing to see the Lobitos locals, like Henry here, going head-to-head with the other "monsters of surfing" and giving it all, big congrats!!! You surely left the Lobitos name way up there. Everyone watchout for more sick pics from this tournament soon!
