The Work Beast Gets a New Air Intake SystemsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #life7 years ago (edited)

I worked all day yesterday to be prepared to start the intake and exhaust upgrades as well as the EGR and DPF deletes on my 2014 PowerStroke. I got all the tools I need and all the information together to get the job done right.

The problem I was having was trying to figure out whether or not I needed custom "tunes" to program the truck to turn off the emissions equipment before I remove it. I spent the majority of the day scouring the internets to find out. It is interesting to me that this one very important piece of information is so prevalently missing from the vast amount of other information to these tasks.

It looks like SCT used to ship with software to allow the emissions equipment to be turned off, but now they don't. It needs to be bought separately.

Fine. It turns out that I did in fact need to buy a custom tune to get the job done. It seems the Dales Super Store sells the best ones, according to what seems like a solid consensus on several forums. I bought that last night, now I have to wait for it to show up in my email and then transfer it to the programmer. That process is a whole other story in a fully Linux house. I had to dig up my wife's old Windows zombie to be prepared for that. The thing barely turns on, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it works long enough to get this job done.

Summary

I took it for a drive after checking my work. I have to admit that this is a pretty significant improvement in performance and sound. It really leaves me wondering why this isn't the stock design of these trucks. Diesel engines really need to breath freely for optimum performance and durability. This modification has no negative effects at all that I am aware of and certainly several positive effects.

There is a lot more to be done, so if you are interested in this stuff, stay tuned!

I also do not understand why car brands use parts in their engines that impair performance, good mechanics. Resteemed.

glad you enjoyed the mods. a good tune can go a long way by itself with some breather mods even better. im sure the car companies have other things in mind besides just performance on lost stock air boxes there are usually noise silencers as a example. So far i have headers, intake and tune on my vette which has made quite the improvement. Can't wait to add a cam next!!

Awesome! I have been considering an intake, exhaust and tune on my wife's explorer. She has the 4.6L and it is just a little lazy. If you tell it to go, it will, but a little livelier would be better.

well just the throttle response alone will probably make a world of difference. just tell the wife your mpg could go up...... if you are easy on the pedal

lol. Yup. She isn't afraid of the accelerator, that's for sure.

im getting like 17 mpg out of my vette but that's ok its about how many smiles per gallon you get hahaha
