The Rescue Junkie

My furry love affair was born at Mojis Sanctuary, almost 4 years ago. Today Mojis is my favourite place on the planet, it's home, it's where our hearts are.

Time spent in the Sanctuary is always a privilege and this week I witnessed another of Mojis magic. A happy adoption of an amazing dog to a wonderful home. In animal rescue world, things do not get much better than this.

Thank you Paul and Fay for opening your hearts and home to Patron! And what a lucky guy he is, moving in with you !

Abraham, endless thank you for creating space for all those miracles and furry magic. I get extra high from witnessing this because of some insights.

We have got 7 dogs, 3 of them we have since they were puppies, 3 of them we adopted as adult dogs and one of them - it’s complicated (I am sure this will come up, in the future). Puppies are great, cute and melt your heart away. Who doesn't love a puppy, right .. ?

But, the connection and bond you get from a dog adopted as an adult, is so much different. They just are so grateful, so loving and they understand the miracle you created for them.

You do not change the whole world by adopting an adult dog, but you do change the whole world of the dog. And this is how I believe we all can change the world, one life at the time. We all do carry that power in us, we just have to tap into it, and start making the difference.

There is also a bonus - you are bringing home an adult! They are potty trained, there is no excessive chewing going on, and they just want to chill with you, till the next walk. You would be missing out though, on a high chance of stepping bare foot in a puppy poop.

This usually happens first thing in the morning, and may I just say, no Italian espresso will wake you up as this lovely experience does. I guess, after all this is something you could live without .. ?

To make this a success you have to be aware of a few factors to consider. Some of the adult dogs may be complicated and have behavioral issues, this could be influenced by their past.

Many people assume, that all adults dogs in the shelters or sanctuaries do have some kind of behaviour issues and that’s why they decide to take on a puppy… This is one of the the myths of the rescue world. Of course there are many traumatized dogs, but there are also many, many perfect adult dogs, needing a loving family.

Make sure you get as much information as possible from the current caretaker. Ask questions about how they get on with other dogs, cats, children. Are they happy being left alone, are they used to being indoor or outdoor, etc. I would highly recommend to invest in an expert’s opinion.

Contact a dog trainer or behaviorist, that's known in your area. And ask them if they would be happy to assist you in this process. They will be able to help you further, and give you most suitable advice for your circumstances.

Seriously thinking of adopting a dog ?
