Our boss' kindness seems not working...

Everyday, 5 days in a week, the head of such successful and growing company is making a way to be more successful. Everyday, 5 days in a week, he keeps on thinking how else can he be a better boss to his subordinates. Everyday, 5 days in a week, that even the only 2 days left for him take a rest are still allocated to bring the bacon to his team.

He was once a follower, taking left and right command from his own boss. Receiving corrective feedback, and even shout. Swearing of his boss is his daily bread, he got no choice but to follow because that is his place.

So he dreamed to be on steal his boss’ position. And said that he will not act the same to his followers. He perfectly understand that his boss’ is just concern about the company’s performance and its success is for everyone in company. Yes, for him as well. But he also believe that the company could be more successful if he will treat his followers with dignity and respect. So that is what he said to himself if he will be in the same position of his boss.

Until the day comes, his boss was just promoted to the higher position, and fortunate enough that he was the one chosen to replaced.

He learned the operation so fast, he has even made the company more successful. The graph is keep of rising. And plaque is filling out his shelf. He is happy, very happy. Because aside from the awards that he got, he also have won the heart of his followers. Everyone is transparent, everyone is productive. He always asks his followers about their day and life. He is not working as a “Boss”. But a friend.

He continuously being applaud and received praises. And in return, he bring his followers up. Some are even got promoted and become his peers. He is an ideal boss. He’s being looked up by everyone, especially by his team.

As years go by, he never change his leadership style. Leaving his office door open and ready to receive the voices of his subordinates. He is pleased to have a conversation with his teammates. His 10 years younger teammates.

Until one of the team leaders came in and told him that one of their crew was not able to report that day, upon asking who was it, the team leader have already mentioned that he is the new one, the 2 weeks old one.

“That is not a problem”, he said. “I’ll cover for him”.

Since the company is getting bigger, the operations is getting busier that it cannot afford to lack of people in each day.

But the absent fever didn’t stop. From the new ones to the most senior one. And continuously, the boss keeps covering for those who failed to report for work. He has left his own work behind just to suffice the manpower needed for operation.

He decided that this should stop. He realized that he can’t continue to cover for the lacking of manpower, while his own work that no one could do is being left behind. So he added the number of manpower. He added extra for the “absent” cases. Mostly are 10 years younger.

Everything is went back to normal, he was able to cope-up with the work he has left. He conducts meetings with his team. Treat is over a bottle of beers during the weekends, he keeps on inspiring his team to bring the best. He shares the company’s success. He even studied the way these yuppies live their life. Social medias, clubbing, trends. He tried to be belong.

But his kindness seems needed to end.

After all the efforts he had made, in order to understand his new subs and teammates, still absences never left his office. He continuously do cover for the operations. Immediate vacation leaves is being filed, seems like his new team doesn’t understand the role of each and everyone that one missing manpower will double each and everyone’s effort to operate.

A text message at 4 in the morning saying that one was not able to report to work because of different illness. While one hasn’t reporting yet despite 2 hours passed their schedule. It is becoming worst and worst. The company is still doing well, but the people in it is just taking advantage of it.

The boss’ behavior and leadership style seems need of renovation. Maybe, just maybe, kindness is not a good leadership style anymore..
