Lionesses making a kill in Africa
Hi I'm Danny! I'm travelling around the world! Follow me.
I'm staying in one of the many wildlife conservancies that border the Maasai Mara national reserve in Kenya. For the next couple weeks I'm going to try and post each evening from The Naboisho Conservancy.
What a day we had yesterday! We got up before six am and headed out on another bush drive. We saw these 2 lionesses by the water staying really still. We continued our drive and looped back around just before breakfast, probably around 2 hours later.
The lionesses were in exactly the sample place but they'd made a kill on a warthog. We were really close - probably no more than a few metres away whilst they fed. The lions can always sense humans, but as we were in a vehicle we were relatively safe.
Warthogs are quite powerful animals but they are the main prey for the lions in this conservancy. We watched them feed on the Warthog for hours, which was quite incredible.
The lions seemed to be fine with us in the vehicle as they fed and being so close is one of the reasons the Maasai Mara is so popular for tourists. If we stepped outside the vehicle the lions would almost definitely run away - this is a good thing - you want lions to be afraid of humans otherwise all sorts of conflicts can arise.
The lions have killer instincts and if you get too close when they are on a kill their dominant protective instincts would kick in and they’d ward you off. If you were to run away they’d consider you food and would probably attack.
