40% drop in revenues --- Taxi Companies vs. Uber/Lyft/Via -- What do you think?

in #life7 years ago

Whether it's Uber, Lyft, Via, Airbnb....these new'ish companies have disrupted old systems---and the old guard doesn't like that.

According to this article, taxi drivers in Chicago are asking for some regulatory support to ease their losses. This year, they're down a whopping 40%.

Now the question I throw out to the steem community is.... "Is this a bad thing?" Do these taxi companies just need to adapt. Is this a typewriter becomes a computer type scenario? Do you ever think there will be a place for taxis in the future?

Is it fair that taxis have so much regulation bogging them down while Uber drivers can just sign up and start driving?

Some cities are cracking down and it's put a hurtin' on Uber and Lyft and other services. Why can't the free market just be the free market?

I think this also begs a bigger question

As technology continues to disrupt everything from healthcare to real estate....regulators are going to struggle to keep up. What are the dangers inheret with that scenario?

Screw taxis. I came home after a long flight and spent thirty minutes dealing with a cab driver who said his credit card scanner wasn't working. After 20 minutes I watched as he "attempted" to enter my card. He was purposely entering incorrect numbers. I tried to point out why it wasn't working and the whole thing degenerated to the point where police were called. St which point by some miracle his credit card scanner began working. The whole time all I could think is "why didn't I use Uber/Lyft"?

Yah....we love it. I travel abroad a lot, and it's crazy you can just get off the plane, put in where you want to go...and not worry about it. I love the map feature.

world is changing so fast its crazy time
