I am so grateful and relieved that he is now doing fine. How about the rest of the family? This was such as stressful time and I bet mom and dad didn't get much rest. This has to be a parent's worst nightmare. We went through something like this with my oldest son when he was six. He spent three weeks in ICU and had major surgery too. Prayers work miracles! As for insurance... work on that when you have a little more rest and a very clear mind. You will need it to navigate the healthcare circus.
