No long ting. This series is already on issue two and I'm fully on board. Hawkman's been around for an age, but can I tell you anything about him? That would be a resounding no!
Any image of a man with wings is going to peak a modicum of interest from even the most grounded person. There's something about the image that's steeped in the mythos of our iconography that predates Christian depictions of them as Angels. I can remember, even as a wee nipper growing up and catching glimpses of him on The Superfriends, I'd wonder about who he was. Who's the other woman Hawkgirl? Is that a mask or part of his face? Does he hunt small rats and voles?
Hawkman Jones, perhaps, yeah?
Well, this book doesn't (yet) answer two of my three pre-pubescent ponderings, but it does answer the fact that the face appendage is a mask -phew-. Being a fan of his look, I've never read him because, if memory serves, he's always been a part of a team of B/C-list back-up dancers that I never really rated therefore, I was never about to invest in a book, with characters I had zero interest in, just to get an inkling about this esoteric looking character.
Well Hawkman doesn't disappoint. It kicks off at an Indiana Jones level break-neck speed, with him on the hunt for legendary items that will help him find out who he really is. The opening scene explains a number of things straight off the bat as in, where does his wings come from, is he a meta? What happens if he falls in the water? How does he carry that mace around inconspicuously? The biggest question it answers are illustrated in the image below...
Hawkman is eternal...
...Hawkman is eternal and has existed throughout time. Yes - even through the Egyptian pantheon! He finds this out by visiting a DC stalwart [NAME REDACTED] who specialises with this type of request and invariably has a history with every major hitter in the DCU.
Bryan Hitch puts down a level of penmanship not seen (by me) since his days on The Ultimates. I've got everything crossed in the hope that he can work the same magic on this historic and monumental character.
